Whether you need a passport or some other form of photo ID to fly will depend on the rules of the airline concerned - check with them. This is separate from what you need to cross the Irish border, which in the case of British and Irish citizens is nothing. Since what is now the Republic of Ireland became independent in 1922, British and Irish citizens have NEVER required a passport to travel between the two countries as they form what's called the Common Travel Area together with the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, however there are rumours that this might not last past next year as the UK government is reluctant to renew the arrangement because of the current anti-terrorist security theatre panic, which is ironic considering where the greatest terrorist threat to the UK in the last 40 years came from. |

You didn't say whether you are travelling to the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland. I am from the Republic and travelling to the UK with my husband for the first time in a couple of weeks. My husband and I had to get a passport each. |

Of course not. Nor do you need to fly. Just walk across the border between north Ireland ( UK) and south. No check points. Why fly? |

No! you can use photo ID such as a driving licence, for children under 11 they do not need any thing! |

You just need some sort of photo id. Passport is handy, because practically everyone has one, but a drivers licence could do. |

Northern Ireland... any official photo ID will be allowed (driving licence, passport)
Republic of Ireland... only a passport will get you into the country |

Republic of Ireland (South) - Yes, you definitely need to have a passport as it is a totally separate country
Northern Ireland - No, you do not need a passport because it is part of the United Kingdom |

No, as it is part of the UK, some airlines will ask for a photo ID though, like a drivers licence, if you are in any doubt, check with the airline. |
