Do you need a licence to drive an electric bike in Ireland and are they even legal???

Additional Details
Just to clarify. Technically it is not a vehicle because it has no motor but it can travel up to 20mph so i'm not sure if you need a license or not

I think that they are legal but I dont know if you need a license... they are not listed on Irish driving licenses as a vehicle but you should contact the Road Safety Authority (Ireland) for more information.

Orla C
You mean a Puch or one of those?

I don't know if they're legal or not, I have never seen any here, which is kind of a pity because they are marvellous (I've seen them in the Netherlands).

I suggest investigating whether or not you need a licence for them in other EU countries, such as the Netherlands, and then ask about them with the Irish police or the Irish Motor Tax organisation, which is linked with the Department of the Environment.

yes, once it has a motor you need a license, need too tax it and insure it as well, until laws change

I think you mean an ordinary bicycle with an electric assist powered by a battery which you charge up. These are legal and no you do not need a licence for them. They basically still need you to pedal and it is only an assist as I said.

Just to clarify for those who have not seen them - it is not a motor!
