You do need photo ID either a valid passport or photo ID driving licence to come over from the UK to the Republic of Ireland on the ferry. Northern Ireland you don't need this obviously as its part of the UK
If you are coming to the Republic of Ireland you'll just have to get one or the other I'm afraid. They always ask for your photo ID and booking number at the check-in kiosk when you arrive for the ferry.
I often get pulled over at customs too when I drive across to the UK and back to Ireland again, I must look suspicious lol. |

I've taken my car over to the Republic of Ireland via ferry, Holyhead to Dublin, and I've done so around 5 times now. We always take our passports but have never been asked for photo id on any of the journeys. The UK and ROI are in the Common Travel Area and whilst we do not need to show our passports, some form of photo id is required so as to prove our nationality if asked to do so...
You can find more info regarding the Common Travel Area at this link...
http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/moving-country/moving-abroad/freedom-of-movement-within-the-eu/common_travel_area_between_ireland_and_the_UK
You are going to have to get yourself some form of acceptable photo id before you travel.
btw
If you do get to go with your car, then you also need to take your certificate of insurance, mot certificate and the car registration documents with you. You need to keep them in the car with you at all times in case you get pulled over for any reason...also don't forget to take your EHIC with you. |

It would be advisable if driving a car with an other countries plates , the reason being the authorities are coming down heavy on people who are importing cars and avoiding the duty payable , it would be in your own interest to be able to prove you are a tourist as opposed to a resident driving a foreign car |
