If your from an EU member country then nope.
But if your outside the EU then you do need one

kirrii
No. You do not need a passport to enter Ireland from the U.K.
However, you do need valid I.D. so a passport would come in very handy.

cherub
yes. even Irish citizens need one. Everyone does.

Of course you do!
Well that is if travelling by plane you need photo id pref passport
if coming by boat then no or by car

I live in Northern Ireland and if asked i would need to show one
The uk and southern ireland are seperate countries, that is like asking if i hop over the channel to france from Dover do i need a passport? the answer is yes! dublin is expensive by the way

dsoc
There is no passport control when travelling between the UK & the Republic of Ireland. Just imagine the problems it would cause at the land frontier crossings!!!! A passport is, however, a very handy method of identification. Before travelling without one ask yourself this question.."If a British anti-terroist officer asked me to prove I was British in order to re-enter the UK, how would I do it?"

your going to need it when you come back in the states

Tipper
If you're a citizen of the european union EEC which britian is you will not need one. you will need a valid form of ID such as a drivers license. but if you do have a passposrt you should certainly bring it, it will make things much easier!!

T M
Nope, technically a drivers license will get you anywhere in the EU.

Wish I had a $1 for every time I've seen this question on Yahoo Answers. Do you know there's a search facility on this thing???

Anyway - the answer is: NO, you do not need one to enter the country.

However - it's handy to have one as a form of ID

AND

Some airlines require you to have one to travel on their flights - but it's not an Irish or English immigration requirement.

That is the FACTS - ignore some of the rubbish posted earlier. They should call this thing Yahoo Guesses, not Yahoo answers.

Nope. Definitely not. Still customs though so you'll need ID and leave the drugs behind. You can even take your pet if you want. Been goin every year since I was 5! Enjoy, it's a lovely lovely place.

sinead
you will need to bring your passport if travelling by plane...but if coming by boat you don't need one.
