Do you need a passport to fly to Dublin from London?

My friend has no passport and we were going to go on a 3 day trip to Dublin but not sure if he needs a passport

I know that you used to be able to travel with a valid ID but not sure if it has changed in the past couple of years

Any help will do thanks =)

You don't need a passport, but you do need government issued photo ID, which in practice means either a photo driving licence or a passport.

Airlines may, however, have stricter requirements in certain circumstances. For example, Ryanair insists that you carry a passport if you check in online for your flight, even if it's a domestic flight within the UK or Republic of Ireland.

Ryanair are a shower of b@stards. They'll use any excuse to stop you flying so make sure you have a passport.

If you are an EU resident, a valid ID is sufficient. everyone else needs a passport.

There is a common travel area between the UK & the Republic of Ireland which means there are no borders as such but you need to carry ID in the event you are asked to produce it.

However, if you intend to fly, the airlines will insist you produce valid photo ID such as a driver's licence or a passport. Even if you go by ferry, you need to produce some form of ID.

If you're planning to fly, check the airlines website or ring them to find out what form of ID they will accept. If you are flying & you booked online, it would have been in the terms and conditions what form of ID you need to produce. They may accept student ID, providing it has a photo but you need to ask them.
