Depends entirely on where you are traveling from..

We have been to Southern Ireland by ferry (Holyhead to Dublin) 5 times now and have never been asked for our passports going either way...we always take them though, just in case!

There is a common travel area between the UK & the Republic of Ireland, which means in theory you don't need a passport but you do need some form of ID. If you're flying to the Republic the airlines insist on seeing some form of photo ID either a passport or a driver's licence but I would ring the airline you're flying with to double check.

From the UK you don't need a passport for the Irish Republic. If you are travelling by air the airline may require you to produce a form of photo ID such as a driving licence.

no.they have a special arrangement with U.K!

It all depends on where you are travelling FROM. If from Ulster, then no passport is required (you WILL need ID), if from anywhere else, then yes, a Passport is necessary.

Did you ask this before by any chance? You don't need a passport! You are travelling to a friendly neighbouring jurisdiction which is part of the same island, assuming you are travelling from Northern Ireland. If you are travelling from England, Scotland or Wales, the same applies. You need photo ID, but not necessarily a passport.

You need a passport it is classed as an European country.
