Britian and Irealnd constitute a common travel area, like the Nordic countries (Norway, Denmark, Sweden etc) and the Schengen group of countries within the EU. Passports are checked when travellers first enter the area, but not at the internal borders within the area. British and Irish citizens do not need passports to travel directly between their own countries. In theory citizens of other nationalities do, but in practice they don't because there is no facility for checking them.

Most airlines now require photo ID, so a passport is convenient for this. But a photo driving licence is just as acceptable.

The UK does not treat the Free State as a foreign country,
as it used to be a part of the UK.
So no.
But remember to set your watches for the time difference, about 10 years or so.

When the E.U set up, they tried making it a zone where u didnt need a passport. But for safety reasons u need a passport to travel anywhere. I needed it to fly from Dublin to Gatwick. I no that Gatwick is a much larger airport, but i cnt c the exception 4 liverpool.
