Do you think I'm being an idiot? |
I got my TV licence reminder a couple of weeks ago. For no other reason than that it was Seachtain na Gaeilge at the time, I filled in the Irish version of the Direct Debit form and sent it to the local office, which, by chance, covers a large Gaeltacht area (that I don't live in).
Today, I received a letter from them in English, with the Anglicised form of my name and address (from my previous licence) detailing the payment schedule.
Out of sheer bloodymindedness, I crossed out the Anglicised name and address and wrote the Irish version next to it, copied an extract from the Official Languages Act (as Gaeilge) on the top, pointing out that if I write to them in Irish they are obliged to respond to me in Irish, and added a couple of lines below, again in Irish, asking them to respect the law and resend me the letter in Irish.
I then crossed out the main body of the letter, photocopied it, kept one copy, sent the original back to the local office, and a photocopy to the Head Office in Dublin. |

Well that is their fault for issuing you with both copies and an admin error on their end, but a simple phonecall would have sufficed, the saying 'cutting off your nose to spite your face' springs to mind. |

No I don't think that you are being an idiot, if you feel strongly about something you should always stand up for your rights. Irish is supposedly our native language and therefore you should be able to these forms back with the details in Irish.
I just wish whoever has given all the thumbs down to anyone who agreed with you, or encouraged your "cupla focal" would go away and find another place to vent their problems!! |

As a non national I don't speak Irish, but my children do and I love the idea that they are capable. They play Gaelic football and it's great to hear these young people all talking in their Native language.
