Well I think it should. As mentioned above there could be tax on it. This would bring money into the economy. Also reduce gangs importing it. It would be fresh and the quality of it could be regulated. This would reduce the amount of people getting bad Cannabis.

It is also suppose to be good for people in bad physical pain. I think at least they should grow it here. You can grow cannabis without the high effect. It is suppose to be a great plant for paper.

They only thing I would see as a problem with legalizing it here is in relation to driving. It takes about three weeks for the drug to go out of your system. So I do not know what type of test you would carry out to see if somebody was high.

The fact of the matter is that there is a whole "taboo" around the subject. I think if proper scientific research was done on Cannabis, they could use it as form of pain relief for people with extreme pain. Maybe take some of the high aspects out of it.

Just a little fact for you. Did you know the American Declaration of Independents is made from Hemp? Look it up.

Personally I would not take cannabis. I never even smoked in my life. But I feel it should be legal for the same reason I think prostitution should be legalized here. That reason is it can be taxed upon, reduce gangs and protects people. But this is Ireland. You know this will never happen. legalizing it would protect people and bring some much needed money back into our economy.

But do not legalise it? Shure we all love drug dealers and people in the sex slave industry? (sarcasm) Let them take our money and take advantage of people. This country needs to wake up about these matters. Oh cannabis is a drug. (fact drink is a drug) Oh prostitution is not moral. (fact a young women forced in the sex slave industry is the same as being raped, but people are making money from her constant rape.)

I think legalise it. People are more important than a society with strict morals. Because these morals are out dated and harming many people.

I think the policy in the Netherlands should be applied throughout Europe.

In the Netherlands, people are allowed small amounts of cannabis for their own personal use, and coffeeshop owners are allowed to sell cannib products. However, no-one is permitted to have in their possession or deal cocaine, heroine, or any other hard drug, which means that the problem is halved, and that kids who want to fool around with cannabis are far less likely to be scammed into going into the harder stuff - any coffeeshop owner who attempts to deal the harder stuff is simply shut down by the police.

It's worked in the Netherlands, and in my experience, this is a country with a very practical attitude about many things, so I don't understand this approach has not been adopted anywhere else. Because it has WORKED ..... and would work in Ireland.

The age limit in the Netherlands is 18, you can only use it in private or in the coffeeshop itself, and you cannot buy more than a certain amount at any time if you're taking it away.

I think alcohol is a far more dangerous drug, and I see people abusing it far more often in Ireland.

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge
Of course it should. You could put a tax on it and stop it from being a 'gateway drug'.
And sher the Greens would love it because every Tom Dick and Harry would be growing the stuff in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint.

i have said no before as an ex user i do know a bit about the subject and although it is a relatively harmless drug it is linked to psychosis. it also promotes lethargy leaving everyone happy to sit around stoned all day and do nothing else. who wants their teenage kids stoned at a time when they need to be working/learning hard for their future. looking at the drug gangs in ireland it may not be such a bad thing as it would take a lot of business out of their hands, on that note maybe all drugs should be legalised.

Orla C is bang on. The Amsterdam tradition does work and with all due respects, the crime ain't have as bad there! Plus you've got the prostitution issue also, which is very strict there again. Then the french tax laws, which also works excellantly......No point in thinking about our european counterparts excellance in day to day governing, our government won't listen, or follow suit anyways.

yes i think so, too much is been wasted on the drug war which we obvious losing! but then it comes, where do you draw the line? It will never happen, ireland is too much of a conservative state, like them luno's liberta and declan ganley and choir and that crowd. There worse then the right wing Americans. More chance of it been legalised in Texas then in Ireland!

Soul Jacker
Definitely.

1. We can tax it as highly as tobacco make a small fortune and it would still be cheaper than buying of dealers.

2. You remove that huge income from the gangs and so drastically reduce their ability to commit gun crimes.

3. It's no longer linked to hard drugs because it's taken out of the hand of those who wish to use it as a gateway drug.

4. When it's n the hands of the drug gangs who knows what's in it? When it's legal there'll be quality standards.

It's very unlikely that those who wish to use cannabis are going to be put off by the fact that it's illegal so why not make it cleaner, cut the gangs out and make a tidy profit by legalising it for consenting adults.

For anyone who cares, I don't use cannabis, I don't want to use cannabis and I do think it's probably harmful with excessive use BUT I don't believe it's any more harmful than alcohol or tobacco.

slipstreamer
I think it should be legalised everywhere. In every country. It is no more harmful than drink which is legal, so why not?

The Netherlands has it all worked out already; everyone could just adopt their policies. In the US it has been decriminalized to a degree in some states: there is legal medical cannabis for personal use and legal dispensaries.

Right now only the dealers and criminals are profiting from the present classification.
