Crazygirl

Do you think the Recession in Ireland is great because it knocks the sense into people?

I think it is great.

People can be brought back to reality.

They are not as plastic fantastic.

Music is great.

There is actually plenty of news in January for once.

You can get clothes for really cheap and no queuing for the January sales.

No chance of euro2 closing down.

Of course some of you may disagree.

Does anybody find they are in better form sense the whole recession thing was declared?

Cheers.

Some very good points. Yes it sad for the ones that never spent much. Now they are losing there houses and jobs. No matter what wage I was getting do I was buying my veet hair remover in euro2. Always bought my clothes in a sale. Would wear my clothes I bought on sale in kerry in Cork. And the ones got in Cork in Kerry. So nobody had the same as me. Tried a few shops for the best quility, cheapest tights and got a great brand. Eat out ones a week in college but during the day for a 7euro lunch. Bought pens and paper in the pound shop. Got sweets and small drinks in multi pack to save money. I have being doing shite like this for ever sense I was 18. Yes you have to be stingy as hell to do this in the Celtic Tiger era. But I never liked money and hopefully never well. It annoys me that I can not get a job in the area I spent four years in college for. That is the only thing that would piss me off about the Recession. But that is life and everything happens for a reason.

Well i think overall of course it's a bad thing but i take your point. I think it will teach some people a lesson. I'll give you an example.

I work for the state so we have to pay for our own Christmas party.
Most years we paid around 50 euro. One year they all went to a 5 star hotel and paid 110 euro each. I didn't go. I just was not prepared to pay 110 euro for a lousy dinner. Those people said at the time ' ah yea thats grand' innit 110 euro' . Ha! Those same people did not want to pay 40 for this years christmas dinner just gone. God reality bites.
People were spending like fools going into dundrum shopping centre and buying designer clothes for 200 euro. I'm sorry but your figure determines how good you will look in clothes not the price tag. I think some young people even with good jobs could not afford to buy a house so they had all this disposable income and they just went nuts buying clothes with it. I read somewhere that 80% of 21-25 years olds spend more than they earn and there's only one way they could do that CREDIT CARDS.
I'm delighted that shop keepers are having to reduce their prices because we were all being made a fool of in this country for too many years.

Havind said all that i think it's extremely worrying overall as people are going to lose their 'two wages dependant' homes. I think they had to stretch themselves too far in order to buy it in first place. Its all very depressing.

And your totally correct about the college students coming out with no hope of finding a job in their area. I found it hard to get a science job even back in 2002 and times were good then. I think it's actually college students i feel more sorry for cos i've been their myself and it is atrocious. They didn't even get a start

No im not in better form cos i was let go from my job and finding it extremely hard to find other work. Cheap clothes mean nothing to me cos i cant afford to go shopping when i have bills to pay.
And im not one of these people who went on 3 holidays a year, bought a house and car i couldnt afford..so the getting back to reality doesnt apply to me

No, two of my sons have lost their jobs and life is anything but exciting for their families. I am watching what I spend, so I haven't been to the January sales - no good splashing the cash to replace things I have that are still in good working order. Same thing applies to those cheap prices for clothes - I can wear what I have for another while. And today I noticed that the price of petrol is creeping up again.

Using plastic is one trap I didn't get into. The only good thing is that I have become aware of unnecessary spending, and am trying to reduce it.

No, I think that's pretty patronising. Not everyone was spending money all over the place. A lot of people have lost their jobs and will now be struggling to make ends meet. I doubt they care about the news, or about music, or clothes. They care about being able to live.

Sorry Crazygirl, have to disagree. I can see what you mean though, great deals and bargains etc, but no good to me, I need to watch what I'm spending, so great deals mean jack shite to me. I wouldn't say I'm in better form, I'm on edge, wondering if my own job is safe. Years and painful years of college to get where I am, and effectively I could be joining the lists of people on the dole, that scares me greatly. I could loose my home, and everything I've worked for, along with all the others. I see nothing 'good' about that kind of worry.
I can see what you mean in, people being brought back to reality, I went to move phone providers yesterday, to be told they wanted a 150e deposit, and I'd get it back in 6 months!!! I quite clearly stated if i was to get it back would I get it with interest? I mean, you wouldn't expect to deposit 150 into any bank and get sweet FA back with it..would you? I'm less inclined to take bull from shops now, there's plenty of other one's that will be delighted with my coppers!

We think it's great.
We were getting sick and tired of this 'New Ireland' watching people on TV wanting to spend their money on holiday homes in far flung places, people having 2 or 3 cars parked outside their door, 3 or 4 holidays a year, all this keeping up with the Jones's, people complaining about property prices being so high (now they're complaining about them being too low!), finding it impossible to get a plumber, carpenter or electrician to do small jobs. We knew a carpenter not so long ago who wouldn't take a job because it was only paying 1000 euro a week!
This recession might make people appreciate the other things in life other than materialism such as friendship and family because for a while there, all they were consumed with was greed and mammon.

gimme gimme more
yea i no wat u mean tere is defo some good to come out of d recession..i tink its kind of a reality check for people and it will make everyone realise that money isnt everything!

but on the other hand im 19 years old and still living at home and really want to become more independant but i cant get a job anywere no matter how hard im tryin but i guess i jus gotta keep tryin :)
