Do you think the legal age for drinking alcohol is to low in ireland?

Show all answers

I should be doing something else
No, I think eighteen i about right. As Soul Jacker says, it might even be a good idea to put the age down to 16 for Bars and Restaurants (But keep the age for entry to Nightclubs at 18, and also for buying alcohol in off licenses)

The reason for this is, when someone gets to the age of 16, in a lot of cases they feel that they are too old to be doing the usual adolescent pastimes such as youth clubs, this then leads to drinking on the streets, which, apart from being dangerous for the teenagers, it also makes certain areas at night 'no go areas' due to their drunken behaviour.

Soul Jacker
I think 18 is just about right. It marks the end of secondary level education for most people so I think it's probably a good age.

I'd even be in favour of lowering it to 16 in places like the home or a restaurant to encourage sensible drinking early.

I think 21 age limit (in most of the US) is completely stupid especially given that in some states you can drive and buy automatic weapons at the age of 16!

Orla C
No, I don't think it's too low. But I do think that there is this macho culture that it's cool to get drunk - completely stupid. Increasing the drinking age is not going to change that, making people realise that all that happens you when you drink too much is that you look like an idiot, and you feel sick then next day, and you might have caught an STD as well, and that doing things in moderation is the best way to go.

JA12
No, the "age" is not too low, but there is a severe lack of education on the misuse of alcohol. There is still to much acceptance of drink driving and drunkardness. There's more of a problem with the older generations and drink than with the very young.

I have more of a problem with the abysmal standard of driver training, they teach people to pass the test over here, they don't teach them to drive. So you end up with young people, thinking they have nothing more to learn, driving fast cars on bad roads, in bad weather conditions and killing themselves and anyone else they hit.

Leaine Ni Loingsigh
Nope, it's the right age.

No, cause in all honesty most of us are drinking around 15, so even if they raised it, it wouldn't change a thing

Patrick O
The legal age doesn't even matter if you live in the country. My dad is from Longford and started drinking and smoking when he was 14. They don't care about it in the country.

Most cultures around the world don't see drinking in a negative light. In many cultures around the world smoking even marijuana is seen as a completely positive cultural custom.

Americans make a big deal about drinking. Irish people drink like it's no big deal and they don't brag about drinking, getting drunk, etc.

When I visited Ireland two years ago I was only 15 and all my family was asking me if I drank and I laughed like it was a joke, but they were being serious!!

Devin
NO!!!!!

i wish i lived in ireland

dollymix (now geeky for a month)
No, because if you raise it it will see an increase in underage drinking, as people will rebel against it.
I agree that 18 is the perfect time to start drinking as it is the end of secondary school and the start of college.

No. The public schools fail to educate kids to avoid alcoholism. And of course the parents (vicious cycles). It's horrible.

Mandy
I think it is.
I think the drinking age should be 21.
They're just getting out of high school, or IN high school
and do not need alcohol to slow them down!
