I'm Me

Do you think these English guys are taking the piss?

There are a few English people in our town, and seems they all say "I'm grand" all the time.

Do you think they just picked it up 'naturally' and unintentionally, or are they trying to fit in? or maybe take the piss?

The Nine Lives of Laura Gonzales
I've got an English friend who says that a lot. I wouldn't say they're taking the piss, it just comes out naturally after you've lived here for a while.

froggequene
I don't think they're making the effort to fit in, they've probably picked up the local lingo & mean no harm by it, if they were Spanish students learning to speak English you wouldn't think anything of it if they dropped a few Irish expressions into the conversation

You should also consider some (a lot of) English people who settle in Ireland have Irish roots and have learned the expressions and twists of the language from their parents or relatives

I should be doing something else

No I doubt it, whenever you hear something new a lot you somehow end up saying it yourself.

I really doubt it! Any time in London I always start picking up the slang and even the accent innit mate.Don't get me started on my auzzie mates there always slaggin me for picking up there accent. I know someone who went to NYC for 6months 10years ago and still speaks like an american!!!!!

Christine
They have just picked up the local lingo, the English girl I sit near in work says it more than I do, I'm waiting on her to start calling everyone a fecken eejit, but shes far too polite for that.

WeenerMan
When they start saying, cup of tea Father, and you turn around and without thinking say, ah no I'm fine Missus Doyle, damn that always catches me out.

I would hardly think they're taking the piss, I notice when my wife goes to Ireland, she's american, she picks up some of our colloquialisms and one of the ones I find her using a lot is "I'm grand" and I know she's not taking the piss just fitting in. I would give these visitors the benefit of the doubt.

IRISH AND PROUD
ah i'd say they are only messing like!!
what do they normally say?before they started saying im grand?
