I'm what's known in Ireland as a Good Drinker, which means that I have have a few pints almost every day in the year.
It never bothers me that I can't have a pint of draught on Good Friday or Christmas Day.
It was a tradition handed down from my parents generation and I'm very happy to carry on some of the few old traditions that remain.
It is something that is unique in our culture and I would hate it if the PC brigade had it changed.
I will be having my few pints again tomorrow... no problem. |

I like the fact pubs are closed. It shows that Ireland hasn't completely lost it's religious identity, and shows that unlike other, 'Americanized', countries, we can still hold on to some sort of custiom or tradition. It also marks an important even in the Church, and shows respect.
It's sad that people can still complain when a pub is closed for one day- rather pathetic actually. |

Why do people feel the need to drink everyday? |

I am not a bit Religeous but I still think the Pubs should Remain Closed.
Give the Staff a Rest,as they Work very Unsocial Hours. It is only one Day like Christmas Day.
As for that Angelus Thing it should be Barred,That Horrible Bell thing they have Sounding off as you walk through Dublin. They have it on the Irish Radio and Television Service on RTE at 12am and 6PM as well.
The Fianna Fail Government Pandering to the Roman Catholic Church as usual,Remember they got Divorce,Contraception and a whole lot of other Stuff Barred as well until Recent Years. They Control the Broadcasting Service. |

Of course they should.
If you don't want to go to one then don't. But why impose it on the whole country? It really is nonsense. |

Purely as someone who is religious, I would say yes, the pubs should still be closed on Good Friday. Especially as it's a long weekend, is going on the lash on a Saturday and Sunday night not enough for some people?
However, there are some interesting points raised here and as Ireland is now a very multi-cultural country, perhaps some leniency could be exercised. Don't want to see it all die out for that reason alone though.
Enjoy your pints tomorrow night - I will! :-) |

I think it's always best to keep secular and non-secular policy completely separate in the running of a modern country. Whether a pub is closed for Good Friday should be up to the Pub owner, and not mandated by the rule of Law. |

im not having a session tonight or any other night, i rarely drink, but to answer the good friday thing, no i wouldnt like to see the pubs open, nothing to with liking or not liking alcohol or pubs, its just how we roll, its only a couple of times a year they are closed, its not a big ask |

No i dont think they should open the pubs, if you are so bored for one day, invite your friends around for a bbq , but have a bit of respect for the day |

I don't drink in the pubs because they are too expensive. I bought plenty of booze yesterday to drink at home at my leisure but I agree the no booze thing is outdated in this day and age.
I tried to buy a burger today at the local burger bar and was told I couldn't as it was Good Friday, that annoyed me more than the "no alcohol" rule. Surely as a non-catholic I am entitled to buy a burger on Good Friday, I'm not asking the staff member to eat it, merely cook and serve it so I can pay for it. |

of course they should
State intollerance. Religious beliefs should be an option for a citizen and not be compulsory. Shades of Dev cast over us all. Brrr |

It would make more money, but not very fair on the staff. |

I'm Irish and to be honest I feel it's pointless closing pubs today.
Ok we are catholic society but look at the likes of Rome ect..I consider them a much more practicing society and you can get yourself a pint of whatever you wish for in a pub today like any other day...
Ohh and not to mention I can't go to the pub and buy a pint but i can go down to my chipper and but fish and chips??? Doesnt add up in my opinion....
Yeah and Lots and Lots of people stacked up on Booze last nite!! you'd swear the pubs were closed for a month!!! |

They close on Good Friday because the law of the land says so, not because it's custom, if you want to know how to get the law amended speak to your TD

The pubs ARE open in Ireland. Maybe not in the Republic but they are in Northern Ireland after 5 o'clock. Last time I looked NI was still on the island - and you did say IRELAND, not specifically the Republic. |

I don't see wy they're closed when we aren't a religious country anymore. However at the same time I love laughing my *** off at the way people can't stand to be wihtout their precious pub for one day. |

personally i think they should be allowed to open and i don't even drink. our holidays and pub opening times should not be dictated by a religion, it's just another thing that shows the church still has a hold on our society which it shouldn't.
besides you don't see them banning the sale of meat today! |

its an absolute disgrace that in this day and age we still have church holidays. if the people who believe in all that nonsense want to not buy drink for the one day, then let them off. only about 10% of ireland is religous anyway so it ridiculous that this holiday is still being forced on us! |
