i think they prefer the photo id, i really depends on the airport policy, it changes alot. Legally to travel domestically with in the US, only people age 18 and over require to show ID. Idk what the policy is for Ireland but here goes:

Photo-ID is not required for children when travelling with an adult if:

* Children under 16 are travelling between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland or on domestic flights within either the United Kingdom or Ireland FROM 1st OCTOBER 2009 ONWARDS THE ONLY ACCEPTED PHOTO ID FOR CHILDREN UNDER 16 WILL BE A VALID PASSPORT OR VALID EEA GOVERNMENT ISSUED NATIONAL ID CARD.
* Children under 16 who are included on the passport of the parent with whom they are travelling. THIS WILL CONTINUE TO BE AN ACCEPTED FORM OF PHOTO ID AFTER 1st OCTOBER 2009
* German children under 10 are in possession of a valid German Government Kinderausweis travel document. THIS WILL CONTINUE TO BE AN ACCEPTED FORM OF PHOTO ID AFTER 1st OCTOBER 2009
* German, French and Spanish children under 14 in possession of a birth certificate and or valid Family Book when travelling on domestic flights within Spain, France and Germany only. FROM 1st OCTOBER 2009 ONWARDS THE ONLY ACCEPTED PHOTO ID FOR CHILDREN UNDER 16 WILL BE A VALID PASSPORT OR VALID EEA GOVERNMENT ISSUED NATIONAL ID CARD.
* Italian children up to the age of 15 years who are in possession of a valid Certificato Di Nascita which has been endorsed as "VALIDO PER L'ESPATRIO" valid for travel and signed by "IL QUESTORE" subject to acceptance for entry to your destination. FROM 1STT OCTOBER 2009 ONWARDS THE ONLY ACCEPTED PHOTO ID FOR CHILDREN UNDER 16 WILL BE A VALID PASSPORT OR VALID EEA GOVERNMENT ISSUED NATIONAL ID CARD.

good luck and have a nice trip

A photo ID is necessary.

If you look at it this way...many children go missing every year.
Anybody could produce a birth certificate and say it is that of the child.
There would be no way to verify that without some type of photo ID!

A passport will do just fine

sammy
yes they do

Trust me I'm a Doctor ♥
They do need valid photo ID now yes, on ferries and aeroplanes from the UK to the Republic of Ireland. They will need a passport if they are too young for driving licences.

I live in Co. Cork and travel from Rosslare to Pembroke and back and have to show all our IDs at the ferryport.

Yes you will need photo ID..if you're coming from the UK you'll be OK but your children will need photo ID..So if I were you I'd get myself a couple of passports..it's much easier in the long run..

There's no such place as Southern Ireland. Have the courtesy to call the country by its proper name.
