Trust me I'm a Doctor ♥
Be careful, we got caught out. When you go to the Vehicle Registration Office it doesn't matter how much you paid for the vehicle they will decide on the VRT at the price their computer values the car. You then have to pay VRT based on the price they value it at, not what you paid for it. A right con.

We bought a 4 year old pickup for 12,000 Euro off Ebay in the UK last year and brought it over. The VRO in Cork valued it at 22,000 Euro, I nearly died, almost double. We had to pay just over 3,000 VRT you can't get out of it but we appealed as the market price then was around 17,000 Euro. After sending in a letter with pages from the Buy & Sell showing the "real" market value they allowed the appeal and we got a refund of 1,760 Euro.

Once the VRT is paid the VRO will issue you with a piece of paper giving you the registration mark, then you go and get your plates made up. Oh and you have to have a NCT test as well within 28 days I think?

It costs nothing to change the plates, just a screwdriver. However, if you want to legally import a car from the UK into the Republic of Ireland that's a different matter.
You have to notify the Motor Tax Office and they will charge you a Vehicle Registration Tax (VTR) and issue you with a new license plate.
The sting is that it is a very expensive tax and they have a register of every car make and model, with a sliding scale of charges depending on the year of manufacture.
You could pay up to 40% extra on the UK purchase price.
The Govt. say this is to protect the Irish Motor Industry but in reality it is another way of gathering revenue.

Check the web site revenue.ie. There is a reckoner there where you can work out how much Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) is payable on the car.

Make sure you calculate your VRT using the link above.
This is the official Irish website.
You must know the exact make model year and CO2 emissions.
It doesn't matter what you paid for it, the Revenue apply a market value, which may be excessive given today's climate.
As a back up, you should contact your local tax office to verify your figures.

VRT will be approx 30% of the ROI value of the car.

If you buy a commercial vehicle VRT will be approx 13% of ROI value

I've just bought a Landrover from UK and gone through the VRT rip off but saved 10 grand though.

Well at least you are doing it at the right time of year. Once upon a time, I brought one from N.Ireland in early December and was charged VRT at the valuation they had decided for that year, even though the year was nearly over. If I had waited the couple of extra weeks until January, it would have cost £60 less (we had pounds back then) - and that would have bought a whole lot of petrol.

It was a couple of hundred pounds a few years ago.
