I'm Irish ;-)
I've travelled quite a bit so I can give you a little insight as to what Ireland is like compared to other countries I think.
Firstly the countryside is quite unique because Ireland never has very harsh winters (despite being at the same latitude as the major Canadian and Russian cities) due to the currents from the Atlantic Ocean - this means that the huge amount of rain we get makes the countryside extremely green - more green than anywhere else I've ever seen! There are sunny days and if you go travelling on one of these days you'll be amazed. But in general stay clear of the main cities, not just for aesthetic reasons, but there is nothing extremely Irish about them (Dublin above all, being nothing more than a tourist trap).
Next the culture is extremely warm for such a northern country (I have met warmer people, who embrace you and treat you like an old friend quicker, but northern countries tend to lose this quality because the cold weather makes them surely.... Irish people tend to be very warm just by nature in comparison!)
Because of the potato famine and poverty since unfair British rule, Ireland does have a very sad history (although before the 1500s when we were ruled from inside Ireland was one of the proudest countries of Europe) and a lot of emigration to try to find a better life, so part of the culture seems to have a certain acceptance of bad news without getting us down too much, but amazingly everything has turned around recently since Ireland entered the EU in the 70s. Our economy has skyrocketed and Ireland is now the second richest country per capita in Europe!! :-)
Ireland's official language is Irish Gaelic, although English is spoken by everyone, and Irish is spoken by less, but our way of speaking English is highly influenced by our own language (for example we rarely say "yes" or "no" for example, because these words don't exist in Irish - instead we say "It is" or "I do" etc.)
We welcome travellers - Ireland started the B&B tradition long ago from houses that fed and sheltered travellers on long journeys... so you are more than welcome to come visit some day!
I hope that helped,
"go n-éirà an bóthar leat" - may the road rise to meet you
take care |

Ireland has one of the best economies in the european union.
It is the biggest exporter of software (per capita) in the world.
It is a modern western country with all the problems of western societies except that we dont have a problem with islamic extremists, partially because of irelands pro palastine stance. Many people(not all) in ireland can sympathise with the prople of palistine because it reflects our own recent history.
Ireland in the last ten years has moved to a more european aligance, while there is a connection to the USA many people are very critical of the war in Iraq. |

Your family left during the famine?? that was like 170 years ago, you must be old :D
Anyways I live in Ireland, weather sucks, roads suck and everything is so expensive but apart from that its cool. Some parts of Ireland are really nice and scenic (donegal, kerry, mayo, galway, clare, antrim and wicklow) others not so much (i live in the not so much part)
Personally i love the desert and high mountains and we don't got either of them in this country :( |

I'm not Irish but live in Ireland. Ireland is my favorite country. People are very friendly in general but they are smoking and drinking a lot! From a pregnant woman to a granny that soon will die, everybody are smoking and drinking. The weather is not really good. Always raining. The city (Dublin) is quite small. You always bump into a person you know if you go somewhere. Anyway, I love Ireland.......!!! |
