It is up to the people of Northern Ireland, during the late 70's they had a referendum, and the overwhelming result was that the people wanted to stay within the United Kingdom.

That is a matter for the people of Northern Ireland

It IS a different country to both the UK and the Republic of Ireland - there's a different feel to it. However, it's too small to survive on its own economically.

northern Ireland is a different country to any other and it is just Great as it IS
been there loved it xox

But they are a Country of the UK like Scotland and Wales. I would like to see them have a completely separate parliament though. Culturally and historically, the deserve Independence...I'm not sure if the majority of Northern Irish people would want it.

Misty Blue
No I don't it's Ireland's and Britain had no right stealing it.

Alan M is wrong.Three of the nine provinces of Ulster are in the Republic of Ireland so it is wrong to term the six counties as such.

Alan M:that's a convenient get out when you are on the side of the thieves. If someone stole your house and moved in you wouldn't ever reach a point where you said och well they can just have it.

Alan M it's already been agreed thet it'll be ours again when the catholics are in the majority so I'm very much looking to the future.:)

please don`t start that argument off again

No, it has only existed for a short few years, and cannot be thought of a 'different' or 'separate' from the rest of the Island/Country. Some would have us think that it is, but it's not.

Re-Unification is the only answer. Let the 6 counties be welcomed back into the Republic, as declared in 1916.

willow
no we should all be together

slipstreamer
It is their decision to make, no one elses. They are their own country in effect, and they are starting in with their own power-sharing self-government at Stormont. Northern Ireland just received a huge foreign investment from the US this month - approx $150 million USD, so I would say that they are well on their way to being more of an independent economic force as well.

Foreign investment was a key component to the Republic of Irelands changed economy

i think N.Ireland should split from the UK and join the rest of Ireland.

mikeburns55
Let them have a vote with 3 options:
1. stay with UK
2. join Ireland
3. be a separate country.

I believe N.Ireland should split from the UK and join the rest of Ireland......................

Northern Ireland already has its own independent government (sort of!) but please do not start this arguement again when we r just getting things back together here.

You're right it is stupid. In fact its the most stupid thing I've ever heard. You've got a group of people who are loyal to one country and a group who are loyal to another and your solution is to alienate both groups from the countries that they love???

Genius.

deburca98
Contary to belief above, Wales is not a country it is a princepality, Neither is scotland or northern ireland. They are not recognised countries as they dont have the power to make their own laws , they are seperate Jurisdictions of the united kingdom. If they were countries they would have have representatives in the united nations but they dont.

The issue is far too complicated for this type of question. Its not about simply making a decision. The people of northern Ireland will never agree on what they want. The fact of the matter is that nomatter what, northern ireland is a financial drain on who-ever it belongs to.

A nation divided will fall.

As most answers have pointed out N. Ireland already is a different country. It is part of the Uk as the huge majority a few years ago in a referendum voted this way. At the moment the economy there is booming and people are living peaceful lives for the first time in many years. Its only a problem for a few people like Misty Blue who wishes to live in the past and play with history books. David D too is stuck in mis leading books. He says a few years. Actually since 1916 as he said. Nearly one hundred years David.
