There is no more a drinking problem than most other places. The reputation of the Irish as being heavy drinkers is, for the most part, apocryphal. The national drink of Ireland, in fact is relatively speaking rather low in alcohol content -- compared to other European beers.
Whilst the Irish enjoy a Jar or two at the local, primarily as a vehicle for socializing, the tough Drink & Drive laws & the ever present Gardai help keep the Irish on an even, if not always sober, keel.
As anywhere there are always exceptions.

The Irish have always been very social people and some like a drink to go with that. But you cant label a whole nation of people due to a few with problems. Irish handle their drink alot better than some people, they could drink you under the table. Ive only witnessed that on occasions like birthdays and Christmas! Everyone has their alcoholics. ; ) |

The rate of alcohlism in Ireland (~220,000 out of a population of 4 million) is about 0.055%
In the USA (16 million out of a population of 300 million) it is 0.05%.
So technically you could say that Ireland has an alcoholism rate about 10% higher than in the US. This should come as no surprise (or perhaps we should be surprised it isn't worse?) to anyone who has tasted both Bud Lite and Smithwick's Ale... |

Ireland its self doesn't have as big an alcohol problem as is made out, there is a lot of binge drinking by the younger people but there are still a lot of tourist's that come over here for a good time & don't forget the amount of stag & hen parties that come here from other countries. Another problem is the amount of eastern European who now live in Ireland that have a very heavy drink culture. So just because there maybe a large volume of drink consumed in Ireland doesn't mean its stereotype of the drunken Irish. |

Not a problem per say. Binge drinking with people my age and younger certainly is an issue. However, generally I find we can control what we drink a lot better than people from other countries. Brawls outside clubs and pubs in England seems far more prevalent than here in Ireland. I'm not denying that it happens, but certainly not to such a large extent. We tend to get more 'happy' when drinking rather than 'violent' and I generally find that as we Irish get older, we prefer to enjoy a scoop or two with mates and a chat, rather than going out and getting pissed and remembering nothing. |

As an Irish person who has travelled all over the world the answer is yes and no. Yes some Irish people (especially teenagers) have a big drink problem but this could be said of people in any country in the world i suspect such as the UK and USA.
No because the vast majority of people in this country can only afford to go out drinking one or two nights a week (friday and saturday). For example I am the only member of my family who drinks and that includes my dad and mother. My two best friends don't drink and out of maybe all the people I know well, or go out clubbing with; only 2 or 3 actually ever get drunk on nights out and this is on rare occurances.
personally i think the irish drink problem is media hype, sure there are lots of people with drink problems who would be better off getting a job instead of sitting in a pub at 11am on a Monday morning (most of them are in my home town). |

I found this to be telling during my two visits to Ireland: rather than asking if I'd like to "drink" some whiskey, my friends asked me if I would "take" some whiskey---as though it were medicinal!
That was my take on it anyways! |

yea binge drinking is the most popular thing to do at the weekend and kids drinkn are gettn younger n younger. alcohol is a dependancy in ireland |
