English accents in England?

All English accents are not the same, for example my English accent is so strong it makes the Irish accents sound like the Queen.

I am from the far north, near the Scottish border and we sound more Scottish than anythign else.
Additional Details
Bev M,

I can assure you i would fight and die for England - i am English to the bone, those people in York, London etc are British not English...

The problem is, people don't know that my accent is the true English one, theose others in the south are English corruptions with French influence.

I don't really know what the point of this posting is.
If you think that Irish accents sound like the Queen, then obviously the only Irish people you have ever met have been either newsreaders, returned emigrants or posh. If you heard a strong accent from the likes of Cork, Kerry, Donegal or Northside Dublin, you probably would have the same difficulties as I would have when trying to understand a strong Scouse, Brummie or even London accent.
I have a friend from Berwick-Upon-Tweed and she doesn't sound remotely Scottish, and you can't get more north than that and still be in England. Then again, I have friends from Tomintoul and they don't sound Scottish either, so I guess it depends on your upbringing, education, the amount you have travelled and how attached you are to the local accent.

I'm still not sure what you're on about though.

You could say that your accent is not pure either because it's influenced by the Scottish accent, which in turn is influenced by Irish and Scandinavian.

I think there are so many English accents that you cannot say which one is 'pure', especially bearing in mind that the Queen is actually of German stock.

People from the capital of England aren't English? but you live on a border, that throughout history, has moved backwards and forwards so where you live now was most probably once in Scotland, and you think you are.

Even Newcastle was once in Scotland, since thats where Hadrians Wall was, and presumably the statement that a Geordie is a Scot with his brains kicked out.

You say your accent would make the Irish sound like the Queen of England. Are you conceited, have some sort of complexion based on a fallicy, or are you just trying to pick a fight?

There is no such thing as an 'Irish Accent' - Ireland has lots of different accents, My Donegal accent sounds a lot more Scottish than someone with a Cork accent, and if I go abroad people often think I am Scottish. Belfast and Dublin are different yet again.

My accent though does not make me more or less Irish than your accent makes you more or less English, whether you are from Berwick, Carlisle, Birmingham, York or London. All of these accents have been influenced, in historical times, say by the Vikings, the Romans, the French, Irish and Scottish, and more recently by the people who followed you home after the British Empire destroyed their countries.

True accents don't exist at all. Wherever you live, it has influence from elsewhere. Everyone came from the first set of people, whether you believe we descended from Adam and Eve, or whether you believe we evolved from Monkeys, all people have the same ancestors, and they moved to other countries, so by definition all languages and all accents are influenced by others.

Is this a question or a statement?

You do indeed seem to be a muppet. So, if us southerners speak English with French influence those in the north speak English with Norse/Viking influence? Nice theory, but utter bollocks to say your accent is 'true English'.

So... Gahzookz.... What's the question? Oh, sorry... your meant to ask the question... not me.

"we sound more Scottish than anythign else"
So the English accent sounds like the Scots? If you're from the north of England, near the border, your accent has some influence from the Scottish.

"makes Irish accents sound like the Queen"
How the hell can you say Irish sound like the Queen? They sound completely different!

"those people in York, London etc are British not English"
Just because an accent might have influence from another country (like yours and from the south), doesn't mean they are not English. And I think you would find people in London and York who would fight and die from England aswell.

"people don't know that my accent is the true English one"
And how would you know the true English accent? Have you recorded an English person's accent from over 5000 years ago? No, didn't think so. Don't you think the Germanic tribes had an influence on our accents?...

You are truly English. Why? because you posted your answer, not a question, in the section on Ireland.

That's because you ARE more Scottish than anything else. I couldn't even understand the English spoken in York. I'm from Oz.

why is this in the irish section? And don't insult the Irish population by saying that our accents could sound anything like your queen.

boofuswoolie
wotzdesassanachsayin?

dollymix (now geeky for a month)
And this is in the Irish section because???...

You will never have a true accent. It will always be influenced by something. I'm from Meath and I have a totally different accent than the people from Kerry, Cork, Dublin or Donegal! And guess what. I'm not in any way less Irish than the other Irish people on this or in any other part of the country.

And you saying that people from London, York etc which are cities that happen to be in ENGLAND saying that they are not English. Will you please get a life. They would not want to hear you saying that. You are not the only one in the country. And if you would fight for your country, go into the war. Scary thought now eh?
