Fellow Irish people, what are your view on Gaeilge? Should it be gotten rid of? |
So many people my age (16ish) hate the irish language! I think its such a tragedy! Why do people find it so difficult? People say its the way its taught.. but can you blame it on that? Its a MASSIVE part of our culture, i would love to be fluent in Irish like!
As the famous Padraic Pearse said 'Beatha teanga i a labhairt'; a language is alive as long as it is spoken
I think this is a beautiful line, we cant really afford to lose our language can we?
What do ye think???
Thanks guys!!! Go raibh mile maith agat agus nollaig shona duit! |

You have a lot of sense. It is a shame that people your age hate the language, but once they get a little older I have a feeling they will come around.
Most 16 year olds I know lack the worldliness to objectively decide the usefulness of something. Right now they are merely going by their personal tastes, which certainly isn't a good way to judge the fate of something so important within Irish culture.
I hate studying math, but I certainly wouldn't decide to do away with it altogether!
I am a Canadian with strong Irish background. My older relatives can speak Gaeilge, but most of them have passed away. I decided I would like to learn the language of my ancestors, so I started studying in university.
I am currently writing and illustrating children's books in Gaeilge.

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge

One word : PEIG
Also, we hate the way people like Eamon O'Cuiv treat non-Irish speakers in Gaeltacht areas. It's an Irish form of ethnic cleansing. |

I'm not for getting rid of it. It enjoys constitutional status as the national and first official language of the Republic of Ireland and it is an official language of the European Union, |

No, it's part of our culture and is on the up.
NÃl, tá sé páirt de nár cultuir agus tá sé ar thuas.........Damn I wish I could say the above properly os Gaeilge |

You guys are lucky. You actively teach one of the only original Celtic languages left. Young people won't appreciate that now, but later they will. We Americans are all imports. |

Have them go to a gaeltacht and they'll love it.
Some people aren't just good with learning or languages and find it hard which is why they don't like it.
Personally, I love Irish and I'm 13. |

Id like to be able to speak it.
Prob is you can only really learn it in school not at home and its not widely spoken enough so it feels like a chore. With french or spanish or whatever all you have to do is spend a few months over there and speak it as you learn it in class. In Ireland all you got is half assed learning in school and Irish language schools in the summer. Most people just dont speak it at home so there isnt enough practice |

There's a very weird attitude to Irish - people seem to resent learning it and the people who speak it, yet they don't have any problem with learning say French in school. Why is this? It's taught better than other languages in my opinion, since you spend the first three years of school only learning to speak it rather than reading or writing it. Whereas with other languages in secondary school, in my experience, you're taught very little about how to actually speak them. I don't understand how people can say they hate Irish so much. |

i would love if the irish naton were fluent in the gaelic tounge. my little one is always asking me questions about it and was facinated when we drove through the gaelteah last week. i think it will always hold a mystical air to it but i also believe that there should be the option of studying it in secondary school. in primary its basic stuff and its fun but i remember my head was wrecked with it in secondarey. english is this countrys 1st language and we have the optin of french, german, etc in secondary school so why not have irish as an option also... |

should it be gotten rid of ? are u serious? no way can u imagine the english giving up their language or the french theirs? no way its enough that we were forced to get rid of it and we all speak english now (i love the english language by the way), and that most people scorn anyone who speaks fluent irish and we arent taught it well anymore, but to give it up? its a beautiful ancient language and the only thing that makes ireland irish anymore so it should be continued and improved upon. i wish i could speak it but i cant. not to get all historic and patriotic here but people actually died in their resistance to the english language been forced upon them and as our national and unique language it should be kept strong. |

I dont think we should lose it completely because people like Padraig Pearse died for our customs ect but I think we should have a choice..!

Its hated so much becuase most of the people teaching it and promoting it are facists. Its forced upon us in as much as they can so much so everyone else just want to say F*uk you and go and talk in english for the rest of their lives. If it was treated properly and with respect i think more people would learn it and ACTUALLY learn it!! For aesthetic puposes and yes because its our culutre and we should keep it!
But unfortunaltely its dying on its a*se beacuse everyone is sick to death of Gaeltacht facism.. poetic justice perhaps :) Like all the special leaving cert points and grants and priveleges you get if you speak irish.. F*ck off the rest of us are just as Irish!! I grew up in the North where I could'nt learn irish then i moved down to mayo (Gaeltacht area) and some people weren't happy!! And all the abuse from teachers and favouritism towards irish speakers... i'd sooner learn it if it wasn't for people like that!! But like I said its them who are killing it.. Ah well. |

It's ok i think we should do it in school but not have a written exam just an oral. I love speaking it but I hate learning about the tiseall gineadach (yes, i know it's spellt wrong!)! Clearly you never had to read PEIG. In the name of the fada, was a great programme. It's out on dvd now. |

I love to LMFAO :D
