Flying into Dublin at end April - what is M50 like? |
We are flying into Dublin Airport and will be renting a car about 10 a.m. on a Wednesday and heading to Dun Laoghaire, then to Enniskerry. We read that M50 is under construction and takes a long time to drive. Should we take M50 or an alternate route?
Then we will be driving back to Dublin Airport from Kildare several days later, on a Tuesday. Should we take M50 then? If not, what alternate route?
Also what time of day should we drive in to avoid terrible traffic? |

The M50 is a joke. It is the culmination of a mickey mouse government party (Fianna Fail) whose years of corruption, sleaze and abuse of planning laws have seen the culmination of the most illogical transport system of any major city in Europe. |

m50 is a joke.you should turn off to the right at the crossroads from the airport and head for the city it will be well signpost and then drive south for dun laoghaire |

I think the M50 is finished, so you can take it to Dun Laoghaire.
It's busy during rush hour times, between 6am to10am and 4pm to 7 pm, so try to avoid it during these times. |

Well on a Wednesday morning you should be ok to drive into the city and out the south side along the coast as far as Dun Laoghaire. You will however meet lots of traffic lights, we love them here!!!!!! The M50 is currently undergoing "improvement" which will lead to an extra lane on each side and so the speed on it in various places is reduced to 60 km. You will also have to pay a toll and you will have to negotiate your way down from the M50 to Dun Laoghaire as it doesn't go straight there. Because of the traffic at the moment it is much of a muchness between city streets and motorway.
Avoid the M50 at all costs between 7am and 10am and 4pm and 6.30pm./7pm.
Coming back from Kildare you will take the M7 which leads to the M50. It is the straightest route for you and if you avoid the times mentioned here you will be ok.
Enjoy your trip, sure traffic jams on the motorway are part of Irish life now. We call it the biggest carpark in the world! |

the M50 is almost finished and its easy enough to drive, well signposted (for the most part) but as one of them said, stay off it early in the morning and in the evening! nightmare!
there is a toll bring which costs about 2 euro for a car, more or less for different types of vehicles (motorbike is less, truck is more etc)
have fun! |

The M50 is poorly designed but its still the most direct road to take!!!! The rush hours would be 6:30 to 10:00 and 16:30 to 19:30 so try to avoid these times at all costs!!
Also there is a toll on the road so you will need change which you might not have if you have just arrived....so get some in the airport if you need it!!! I think its around €2
Enjoy your holiday |

The M50 = Ireland's largest car park. Its under serious construction and can be a headache during rush hour. If you can find another route then take it, look up Google maps. |

"Scary!" says this American. Sorry to say, but it is crowded and confusing. Unfortunately, there really isn't an alternative. The N7 from Kildare might be pretty full too, because many people who work in Dublin commute in from there; it's become very much a bedroom community for Dublin. Just be prepared for it to be difficult, and be as patient as you can; it just has to be endured! |
