For those of you from Ireland : why does everyone seem to favor the west coast over the east? |
I posted a question about a day ago stating that I'd like to move to Ireland & really could use any info anyone was willing to give me. Although I didn't receive very many answers, from what I could gather people seem to prefer the west coast of Ireland to the east. Why is this? I heard that it doesn't rain as much in the east. I was looking to move perhaps, to Wicklow or Wexford. What do you think? |

I live in Dublin, and the east coast is nice, but it is all becoming part of dublin as housing estates and industrial estates are moving down the south of the east coast. There are some beautiful areas in Wicklow, but I often go away for weekends with friends just to get out of Dublin and over the west is more peaceful, a lot cheaper and the people are friendlier. But at the end of the day it is a personal opinion. If you want to be in close driving range to a city then Wicklow or Wexford would be ideal, (it only takes about and hour to an hour and a half at the most to drive between Wexford and Dublin)but your cost of living is going to be more expensive. Anywhere you go in Ireland it is going to rain, and you won't notice much difference in the amount of rain fall between both coasts. |

Im from Dublin myself and I prefer the west coast simply because I think those countie, my favorite being Clare are more beautiful and I hate cities! Kerry is absolutely gorgeous too... Galway is always a laugh aswell... Great for a weekend away! I dont know bout the weather but all of Ireland seems to get its share of rain!!
Wicklow is an amazing county...Id chose there. Theres lots of historical things to see, like Glendalough and its a nice little green county and easy to access Dublin from!
Hope you like where ever you go, but at least visit!! |

I'm from Bray, Co.Wicklow and live in London. I visit home regularly. On the last occasion in February, I was shocked at the number of Factories that have sprung up between the Airport, Dublin and Bray. The countryside is crisscrossed with motorways and the cost of property is astronomical. I am told that these prices spread North West and South in at least an 80 mile radius of the city. The West of Ireland and down around Kerry is still relatively cheap but there is very little work. It is still beautiful down around Valencia Island in Kerry and property reasonable. I will not retire in Ireland for the reasons I have mentioned earlier but have found a beautiful spot in another country where the weather is always warm............. |

I'm actually from the north, so this could be an unbiased answer! The west coast is probably the more isolated although there are big cities there as well, but it could just be some romantic picturesque reason. The east is where you will find Dublin and it is the side that faces England, so maybe some of the old Gael vs Planter feeling is manifesting itself at an unconscious level. At the moment the east seems a bit better for public transportation, although Wicklow itself is very lovely.
However when you have the likes of Connemara, Kerry, Killarney etc on the west, it could simply be the fact that they are more scenic that is ensuring people recommend that side of the island. |

The west coast probably has the edge in terms of stark scenic beauty. The cliffs and mountain landscapes are quite beautiful, the pace of life is slower, the weather more powerful and the west has a "get away from it all" quality about it.
However this is not to say that the east is not worth going to. Wicklow offers landscapes as good as many places in the West, given the fact that large parts of the county are mountainous. Wexford is a bit flatter, but there are some great beaches and gardens there. It's also a county of great historical interest. Another advantage of Wicklow and Wexford is their proximity to Dublin and the attractions of city-life. |

see thats not really true sthe population in ireland is unevenly distributed with most people living on the east coast not the west. that kind of implies the east coast is more popular. the west is more rural more beautiful in places but it is also less developed this does add to the charm. |

I'm from the East coast too, the west isn't warmer, when it rains it does be a lot heavier than on the east coast. All the counties on the west coast especially Clare, Mayo and Galway are nice counties, the scenery is great and It's quieter over there. I think people on the west coast take life more easy than the people on the east. |

Well I'm from Dublin and I like the east coast. The west is a bit warmer I guess though. IM me if you want to ask anything else about Ireland. |

Wexford is a nice little place, nice and handy when travelling from rosslare harbour. wicklow is a beautiful place, i think you have better travelling facilities to the west, this is why people opt for it .If you go by car you can get any where in a few hours ireland is a very small country. |

I visited Ireland last fall and the east coast is not as accessible for shipping, but it is beautiful, but rocky and not good for industry and farming either, they told us. The west coast has a more favorable terrain and port access, that is why your major cities are located there. |
