Gangland crime in ireland out of control? |
Ok im sure most living in ireland will be aware of the current crime going on! and a lot of it is related to drugs ... i mean most of the time you turn on the news you will hear of a shooting stabbing in the likes of dublin and limerick and its spreading to parts of cork tipp and other counties now too... Only 3 years ago i heard about a man in his twenties who was shot dead aged only 25 in tipperary at a house party ,an area that had never heard of this kind of violence..the gardai at the time said it was a fight for power in the drug trade..Its clearly out of control and if steps are not taken to fight it ,its going to get worse..i think stricter prison sentences should be given along with tougher policing by the gardai.. i mean its got so bad now ...maybe the gardai should all carry a firearm??? the gangs carry guns so why would they fear the law?? i think the law has to change..what do you think? |

My solution to the soaring crime rate woold be:
No more jail for young offenders, this is just a glorified holiday camp to refine their criminal skills. All young offenders should be placed in a boot camp. A short, sharp, shock that will leave them traumatised, and fearing to ever return to a institution like it again (Works for 82% of USA young offenders)
All drug offences would carry a 20yr sentence - mandatory.
Firearm offences - Life - No parol. |

We could talk and talk and talk about this crap, but nothing will ever happen until something happens. An action having a reaction. Veronica Guerin was murdered, and then the government decided to act. That filth in Roscommon, who abused her children to the extent she did, got 7 or 8 years?! And the only reason she got that was because it was the maximum penalty, then the law changes.....too little to late for her children. Life should be life, and the boot camp as another person mentioned would be a great idea, but again, our government won't bother their arses doing anything. |

Life should mean life imprisonment and an end to this revolving door policy. But judges appear to have both hands tied behind their backs with test cases that have gone in favour of the person taking it and the do gooders. I would not be in favour of giving the Guards more powers, they are easily abused as has been seen with the likes of the Richie Barron case, the Frank Shortt case and the use of Internment in Northern Ireland, that backfired big time on the authorities in there and acted as a recruiter for the Provisional IRA. Also giving them guns now would only get more people shot, more guns = more shootings, you only have to look at America to see that. You don't want some pissed off trigger happy guard straight out of Templemore giving you penalty points and you start giving him or her lip. The next thing you will see is a gun in your face.
The gangland criminals need to be sent to prison for life, all their ill gotten gains seized, houses ,cars, etc and their many bank accounts frozen here in this country and abroad. Everything needs to be taken from them, nothing can be left standing. |

theres is no justice in this country, two weeks ago two girls were beaten and raped near slane by 5 polish men who were let out on bale!
rapists and murderers are getting as little as 2 years in prison less if they show good behavoir, its an absolute disgrace!
EDIT: Ash 1, there nationality is not the issue, the fact is after raping two girls they were let out on bale, to affend again, whos to stop them fcking off to the uk?, the point is if this was america they would have been kept in jail for up to 2 years pending there trial, but in ireland there let go??they wearnt deported, or locked up, they were let go to reafend or fck of back to your own country and get away with what they did!
am i the only one outraged by this?? |

gaspipe - those men were lithuanians, not polish.
but i agree sentences are far too lenient here. Just reading about the man who murdered Manuela Riedo - he already had convictions for violence leading to the death of a young man, breaking in and beating up an elderly man in his home and sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend, along with numerous other crimes. And here he is out walking the streets and able to do what he did to that poor girl. And lessons probably wont be learned either.
No wonder there is so much violence, gangland or otherwise - they know theyll be out in a few years. Im so tired of reading about criminals getting off with nothing more than a slap on the wrist. But i dont know what the average person can do to change things. |

Gangland is a law of its own, and even the gardai are in fear in certain no-go areas. Judges have a lot to answer for, some of them are very lenient. In the Sunday papers, I read that Gerald Barry rightly got life for killing Manuela, but David Byrnes had a different judge, and got just three years for killing Brendan McEvoy, despite 72 previous convictions including violence. Even worse, he had been released less than 12 hours after serving just one month of a six-month sentence when he killed Mr. McEvoy. Surely we would all be safer if thugs like this were incarcerated for the full term, instead of prison places being filled with Shell-to-Sea protestors and television licence non-payers?
I wouldn't like to see the gardai with guns, but there are obviously some hot-spots in this country where nothing else would work. And I think the prison should be more of a deterrent and less of a holiday camp. A choice of menu? You wouldn't get that at home. You'd have to eat what you were given. More should be done to scramble the airwaves to prevent criminal gangs running their drug businesses by mobile phone, and there should be some sort of listening device to monitor all calls, in case the scrambling isn't effective. In this country, it looks like more care is given to the perpetrators than to their victims. |

I agree the sentences are incomprehendably unjust, and as for gaspipes point if the criminals are non-nationals they should be deported, we shouldnt have to pay to incarcerate anyone but our own scum |

You say the Gardai should carry guns? Another lovely British comment. Well then I can prepare for you a place in Greece where the policemen carry guns and shot teenagers. It just happened a few months before. And do not open you mouth and say this was right...
http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/rioters-rampage-through-greek-cities/2008/12/08/1228584688900.html
what if that teenager who shot dead was your child? Have you ever lived under a military dictatorship? If no then pls shut it up.
Foreign nationals: I haven't seen so many foreigners criminals here but if there are, then there should be a better control in the airport in order to avoid unwanted visits. The most of the criminals are the people who call them knackers, and that because the government and the society has ignored them for so long, putting them in council houses-prison not providing for the appropriate and stricter education for their children and on the contrary giving them permanent social benefits they only screw the system by using that money for drugs. And then the problems start...
Education is the answer. Common sense and better welfare. You cannot fight the consequences, you need to break the roots. With conservative politicians you don't expect anything better. The world has progressed, we need better ideas. And it is a matter of time where the Irish will find a trustworthy person to run the country. The change has started, just see the American example.

The way i have noticed it ( i am not irish) drugs at this rate is very new to Ireland up until 6 years ago there werent any scanning in the airport at all.
Now i have heard youll striped down naked (speaking only).
I hvw the idea that the goverment dosnt know how to handle it and i think it thinks that it will just go over when after time.
Which will not hapen of course but ey they dont know that! |
