Going to Ireland for a while...?

me and some friends have always wanted to go to Ireland (mostly because of the accent :)), so next year we plan on going to Ireland for a weekend or couple of days for our birthdays (they r all around the same time). i was wondering, do you think this would be possible and affordable?
(and if we do go, is there anything in particular we should do there?)

I am from Galway, so this may seem baised but I think it is definately the best city to visit because it is probably what you expect and therefore want Ireland to look and feel like,
It has typical 'Lonesome windswept Celtic '' scenery in Conamara, which is located about 30 minutes from the City, and then the City itself is more of a big town with a rich history it also has a fantastic night life.
Kerry also is a very beautiful place, scenery wise it would rivial Conamara, however it lacks a City, (it does have Killarney-nice but small, Kenmare-very nice but smaller again, Tralee-avoid).

First of all, Ireland has many accents. Not just one.

Second, Dublin is not representative of Ireland. Even friends of mine who are through and through Dubs and love their city are under no illusions about this, and have even said that they feel the compared to the rest of the Republic, Dublin still feels very English.

Third, you should go to Galway if you are only spending a few days. It's got great nightlife, County Galway and neighbouring County Clare both have gorgeous scenery, there are the Aran Islands nearby and you will hear the Irish language spoken - which we here in Ireland never refer to as Gaelic, by the way. Galway city is right beside the seaside, and if you are of a robust constitution, I would recommend bringing a swimsuit and having a dip at the Salthill swimming area.

Plenty of inexpensive tourist accommodation in Galway, try www.hostelworld.com for more information.

Not wishing to knock the Antrim coast, Belfast or the Giant's Causeway at all, because I have heard only good things about them for tourists, but those places are in Northern Ireland and therefore officially part of the United Kingdom.

and also the nightlife in dublin of course.

It depends on where you are. there are affordable flights from most main US airports. (I presume you're american/canadian)

There's a lot to do in a weekend and you're best staying in dublin (ideally you'd need a week to travel around). In Dublin- You could visit temple bar for the bars etc, Visit the national museum (it has two sites in dublin- Kildare st and Collins barracks), go on one of the bus tours around the city, go shopping on grafton st. Go to Dublin castle, trinity college to see the book of kells.

The Antrim coast is a must, with the Giants Causway. Good nightlife in Portrush and Belfast.
