I'm currently living in Ireland. It's a very expensive country. Especially around cities like Dublin. Dublin is the biggest city but it's not that big. You can easily travel around Dublin by bus. If you're planning to drive it will be a nightmare!!
The countryside is very green with narrow roads. The west coast is the nicest. Always have a raincoat with you as if it's not raining it will be raining very soon ;-p
If you are staying in Dublin there are bus tours to visit the main areas of interest. I would only recommend to rent a car if you're staying longer than a week.

Since it is your first time you DO NOT want to deal with driving on the wrong side on roads that often accomadate one car at a time. I suggest a bus tour such as Brendan Tours which I used with great luck on 4 different trips. You have a choice of lengths and locations with these tours and no hassle with luggage or bookings and such. No matter what just go. It is a lovely place with lovely warm people who make up for the normally cool, wet climate.

i went to Dublin in March of 2006. It's beautiful there, you should be very proud. There are so many free museums and historical estates to visit that mostly you just have to worry about the airfare hotel and food when you get there. I visited the Guiness Factory and 3 or 4 museums. they have a pub that is a couple streets over from the Guiness factory that is known as the oldest pub in Dublin- definintely try their Lamb stew. It was definitely worth the trip and the people there are incredibly nice.

What I loved most is the countryside. whenever you go make sure you take a tour bus to the country. the grass is so beautiful and green and there are rainbows almost every single afternoon. have a great time!

I went about a week in Dublin in May of this year and it was fabulous! It is expensive but no more than most European cities. Our main regret was not having time to rent a car and go into the countryside.

In Dublin, I would highly recommend one of the many pub crawls (we did the literary pub crawl and it was fun), the Book of Kells, the Killmanan Jail tour and just wandering about the city. You can buy a Dublin city pass on-line and get free admission to most sights. The Guinness Factory is lots of fun and you get a free beer (with admission price, including in the Dublin pass) at the top of the factory which has a great view of the city. The Jameson factory tour is also entertaining (good restaurant inside).

Its obviously expensive place to visit.
It also depends fron which part of the world you are traveling from. For example if India it will make decrease your purcahsing power = to the value of Ireland.
When I travelled my purchasing power reduced by 7times!!! So that is expensive.

it depends which part you go to. If its countryside you need a car.. maybe 20-30 euros a day to hire + fuel costs

there are railways, just its a bit of a hassle to use them.

if its somewhere like dublin or galway town you don't really need to hire a car, both have quite good public transport.
