Has murder become acceptable in Ireland?

With yet more criminals and gangland figures being shot almost on a weekly basis, there seems to be no condemnation from politicians, the church, the guards and society in general. When people were being shot in Northern Ireland during the troubles there was outrage at it, but yet all we hear from those in charge is silence. I know some might say, ah sure he was a criminal or a drug dealer and won't be missed, at least they got him off the back of the people who live in that town or housing estate. If that is true, then murder has become acceptable in this country as no one seems to be condemning it?

Eddie F, I totally agree with you. It will never be acceptable but the level of silence from those in positions to do something about it is a scandal. They had plenty to say about similar events in Northern Ireland but when it's happening in our own backyard you don't see too many stepping forward and saying enough is enough.

No, Murder at any level is not accepted by the Irish. When Veronica Guerin was murdered, politicans and local governments rallyed together to set up the CAB (Criminal Assets Burea), so by saying the politicians accept, maybe a bit too loose of a comment. With criminal laws, its not so easy just to lock someone up etc. Its a proof without reasonable doubt, its not as easy, and pity its not too. Our laws are quite slow, and we usually only react when something tragic happens. I agree with Eddie F, but although we don't agree, and are disgusted, these criminal gangs don't care who gets in the firing line, pardon the pun. Most of us, are better keeping our heads down, and leave it in the hands of an Garda Siochana, and the courts. I personally wouldn't risk shouting my mouth off about someone in particular for risk of my family getting hurt. Yet, I would have no problems airing my concerns and disgust at the gangs doing it, but I wouldn't go mentioning names. Not much us ordinary joe folk can do, unless you want public gangs against the criminals.....

Murder is never acceptable.

I live in Limerick and we have our own problems. My great city is tarnished by these thugs.

I have nothing but the upmost respect for the citizens of Limerick, they are kind, friendly and accommodating, (As well as being the sports capital of Ireland!!) yet, no matter where I roam, we are still known as stab city - absolutely ridiculous!

The crime family's of my city have blackened the name of Limerick, all the decent, hard working people are sick to death of them.

Murder is still a crime - doesn't matter if it's drug related, gangland related, or otherwise...We will never sink to the level of thugs who think they can murder without fear or retribution!

i think that citizens of a country will not worry about murders unless it involves them. when you mention the church, what are a bunch of priests going to do about gangsters shooting the guts out of each other in stab city? and politicians, well their too busy being corrupt than to care about murders, and then thers ordinary citizens like you and me, what are we gonna do to stop some gangsters killing each other? so has crime become acceptable in ireland? no its just that most of us can do nothing about it.but that doesnt mean we dont care

JA12
I think that there is a sort of public acceptance on murder as long as those being murdered are in the criminal and drug dealing activities, let them kill each other off and the problem will help solve itself. The Criminal Justice laws are pretty impotent where these people are concerned.

However, where an "innocent" person is killed, then there is an uproar and huge pressure, at least for a week or so, for the offenders to be brought to "justice".

I think you're only trying to make trouble by asking this question, which I answer emphatically NO. Murder is not acceptable in Ireland, not by politicians or anyone else. I suggest you actually open your ears and tune into a regional radio station, and you might actually learn something.

1)Politicians the only thing they do is getting more money and more and more and cutting more and more jobs every day
2)The church has a great ability to brainwash people. The priests should shut up their mouths and try to accept the modern ideas of 21st century. ARE WE SERIOUS? Do we expect change from the church? In which century do we live? Wake up people...
3)The schools and the education must be changed and provide education with the full meaning of the word, but since the "shut up", "I don't care" is the Irish way don't expect change.

I haven't seen any complains from the local people. They don't care about the situation unfortunately, despite they don't accept it. I haven't seen any Irish complaining about anything expect how dreadful are the immigrants in their society. I have seen a couple of times anti-social behavior in buses, trains no one said at least "could pls stop it?" No one said anything when a bunch of idiots were littering buses, parks, pavements. Maybe they think it's just normal or they don't understand the difference between the right and wrong behavior. And then you expect a change....

If what happens in Ireland would happen in countries like Switzerland, Finland, Greece, Canada... people would be so angry and there would be protests and riots in daily basis.
