Samian's Sixth Account

Has the Republic of Ireland ever elected a Protestant Taoiseach? If so, what was his name?

I read somewhere that Ireland has had a Protestant head of government, but i was wondering whether or not it was true...

No we have never had a Protestant Taoiseach but Garret FitzGerald' who served two terms as Taoiseach, had a Protestant mother. We have had two Presidents who were Protestant, Douglas Hyde (1938 - 1945), the first President of Ireland, and Erskine Childers (1973 - 1974).

This has been dumbed down for the purposes of propaganda, but the earliest people to push for self-government in Ireland, back in the 1800s, were Dublin Protestants. They felt it was in the interests of economic development of the island as a whole, and that the oppression of Irish Catholics was morally wrong. English Catholics did not get the same deal in England at all.

So you see, religion only mattered if you were prepared to make up the rules as you went along.

I for one am very glad to see Church and State divided again. State matters involve all citizens, but religion should be a private matter. I hate to see it used as a excuse to promote violence, discrimination, oppression.

Podge and Rodge Tribute Band
We've had plenty of duff ones but no Protestant ones yet.
Give it time though, any day now we expect Big Ian to be Taoiseach and Adams to be President.

I think you might be referring to the current President of Ireland, Mary McAleese. She's originally from Northern Ireland, but she's Catholic.

££
I seriously doubt it, unless the reference is to Northern Ireland.
