No, not really. Before the Normans/English invaded in 1169, it was a series of fragmented kingdoms and chiefdomships, which was only sort of under the control of High King Brian Boru for the few years he was High King, and even then it was kind of shaky.

This was why it so very difficult to clarify who really was in control of the island, because Brian Boru was killed in 1014, over a hundred years before the Norman/English invasion, and was never replaced.

Why When How
No, the island of Ireland was always small Kingdoms. Then areas were ruled by the Vikings (e.g. Wexford, Dublin) and then in 1169 the Anglo Normans arrived and then it was ruled by London. We had our own parliament for a while but London was pulling the strings.
When we gained independance from England, six counties in Ulster remained part of the UK

Daithi - sorry now but that's not correct like. The Normans arrived at Co Wexford in 1169 at the request of the King of Leinster ,Diarmait Mac Murchada because we was losing control the the other Kings.

Also it's a romantic notion to think Brian Boru was King or Emperor of All Ireland, but in fact there was so much fighting and betrayal amongt the powers that be, that he was never ruler of the island.

Polilical conundrum...

yes if you go back far enough, Ireland was ruled by one king, but then it was divided by in to factions & rulled by different families who declaired themselves king.
