Have many people who lived in Ireland all/most of their lives really seen much of their own country.? |
I was talking to a Canadian tourist last week and he was telling me where he'd been. It accurred to me he had been to more counties of the Island than I had.
I have only ever been to Donegal (where I live), Derry (where I was born), Antrim (only Belfast), Fermanagh (Belleek) and Dublin. Besides that, only the counties you pass through between Donegal and Dublin -oh yeah, and a toilet stop in Monaghan. |

I've been to most counties in Ireland.
Ive never really been in Tipperary, only driven through it. Ive been to Belfast but Ive only travelled through the other counties in the North.
Ive been in every other county mostly because I have friends who I stay with you have moved form county to county.
Although I havent been to most places as a "tourist" when im there im staying with friends so one housing estate is the same as the next, you could be in any county really.
The places Ive been to as a "tourist" where the places I went to on holidays as a child.
So if you mean being in a county and appreciating the sights (as opposed to just sitting in your friends house) ive only really been to Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Clare, Limerick, Kerry, Cork, Louth, Monaghan.
Now that im an adult I dont really find the idea of travelling in Ireland that appealing because im used to it. If I travel I want to see something different.
Althouigh if I had children I would around Ireland on holiday. |

i have seen plenty of Ireland...i am from N.Ireland just outside Belfast.
when i was younger i used to go down south alot for holidays......normally Limerick , Dublin , Tipperary , Cork ...all those places....as it used to be more expensive on a plane...unlike now.
And been to all the places over Northern Ireland too.....like Newcastle , Portush .....but i prefer the Republic.lol
some don't nowadays as flights are cheap now...and going to Republic for hoilday is more expenisve than Spain.lol...it is a shame but .
My mum always used to say to me ''you should see your own country before you have seen any other'' which is true''. lol
so YES i have seen alot of Ireland....so now im on to the bigger places ...America |

I love my home county Tipp and all, but to be honest, the only way is out. It helps that I have a large and widely dispersed extended family, that my dad was a truck driver, that I've been a student in Dublin & Limerick and that Himself is a foddener, so I've been on a hell of a lot of road trips. I haven't been to Tyrone, Fermanagh or Monaghan at all, other than driving through, not even a pee-stop. I think I've been to the rest though. The All-Ireland pub crawl is going well. I know what you mean though, it's only since I learned to drive that I've managed to go further than Munster/Connaught. |

What a good and insightful question! I'm American, so I don't qualify for your question; but I've been to 12 of the 32 counties on the island for more than just a rest stop, on two visits there. I'm interested to see the answers from those of you who live there. Have a star! |

When you live someplace, you're occupied with work, paying the bills, and keeping up a social life, etc., so you don't really get the chance to go exploring in your country of residence. When I lived in the Netherlands I didn't really get to see much of it, but I did see more of it after I move to Ireland - ironically!
And when I lived in the Netherlands, we travelled all over the Republic of Ireland. There were very few places we didn't see .... |
