Dublin is a great city, I'd skip the book of Kells, it can be a long line/wait and you really don't see much depending on which page is exposed that day. But if it's short line, do it and be sure to buy the book on CD ROM to get a really good look at it's beauty.
National Museum, Collins Barracks (where they even have a few Worth gowns on display, if you are into textiles.) The National Gallery is outstanding. Shopping on Grafton St., Set aside a morning or afternoon for St Stephens Green to check out the free art shows and sculpture. Temple Bar! Just plain Yes!
If you like Trad, CCE has a session on Thursday night, Dart, Monkstown stop, don't go alone after dark, it was a dodgy walk when I was there last. Great sessions almost every night on Howth, BUT you have to ask around as to location and time, nothing is posted.
Last time in town we saw a great theater at the Abby, the price was surprisingly low compared to Broadway. My best suggestion is to stay at a B&B a good host should be able to give you some great seasonally correct suggestions.
Meals: I'm a seafood lover, so all of these are on Howth. For a 100 Euro/person suggestion King Stric , just plain amazing. For 20-25 Euros/person my favorite restruant in Dublin is the Waterside on Howth. Really cheap Beshops Fish and Chips less than 15 a couple, really, really cheap Cafe Cara, try the smoked cod and chips. Another nice place, Lotsa Pasta but you need reservations. All these places are on the water and within a 1/4 mile of each other. Cafe Cara has a warm spot in my heart as it stays open late and feeds hungry musicians after sessions. As you can expect it is not the most "formal" place in town.
As far as places to avoid, stay off of Sheriff's St. near the Pearce Dart Station, Monkstown after dark. Some locals have cautioned me regarding O'Connel St. but I'm from Chicago, not much phases me. Travel is like being at home,if your personal saftey alarms go off leave. Simple as that, always trust that instinct. |

Be careful at night and ask the locals. There is def. one part of town to avoid at night, can't recall the name, sorry! It can be a very rough town, but stick with people and you're grand. |

You have got to go to johnnie fox' s pub situated in the Dublin 'mountains'
It is one of Ireland's oldest and most famous traditional irish pubs and claims to be the highest pub in the country.
The food is divine, the atmosphere warm and friendly, the pub has traditional irish music on seven days a week, loads of famous people rock stars and heads of state have visited, so give it a go! |

The 'Temple bar' is a section that young people go to and sing and dance on the tables, literally! I've never had so much fun anywhere. Ireland is wonderful all around! Enjoy! |

Dublin is a great city to visit. I live 1 hour from there. Yes temple bar is the best spot. I would not worry about the places that you need to avoid. You are going to be in the centre of Dublin so the worrying spots are a few miles out. Just stay near the shops pubs and restaurants. Be sure to visit Fitzsimons pub in temple bar. They have fantastic irish dancing shows on. My friend used to do them. You know I often look in this section of answers for people looking for info on ireland so maybe i can help a little. Im going to new york in march and 3 times have posted a question on tips, places to eat, shop as you asked, the best places to go to. No one has ever bothered to reply. Not one answer. I posted one an hour ago. twice. Not one answer. You think that is telling me something? |
