How are Americans greeted in Belfast these days?

I'm considering moving there for my Ph.D. work. My ancestors were Scottish, not Irish, nor am I certain where I stand on the politics of the region...

I'm Scottish and been to Belfast, its an amazing place and the people are very friendly, County Antrim is mainly made up of the descendents of Scottish settlers anyway. You'd love it there for sure.

You'll be fine. There's plenty of Americans working in Belfast.

gizmo21
You should read the lettertoamerica site - an American man living in Belfast for a year. There's loads of info and pics. see link below.

If you want to study, it will not matter who you are, what you are or where you're from.
Just stay out of politics.

Wouldn't worry too much about it. Most of the inhabitants of Eastern Northern Ireland are of Scottish ancestry anyway ....

Oh, and we take issue with other nationalities having their say about 'our' politics, and Americans in particular should be careful. In Northern Ireland, shooting your mouth off about politics there can cost you your kneecaps. Keep your mouth shut and you will be fine, and you'll have a great time.
