How bad do you think the recession could get?

I have heard that builders are stopping any building work and that houses and apartments are now empty.

Given the massive rise in prices over the past 10 years do you think Ireland is in for a major correction.

I cant see this happening without some major industrial collapse though and it would not be good for anyone at all (apart from maybe the irish abroad)

Do you think we will see 3 bed houses in dundrum for 150k and city center apartments going for the same.

It would not be a good thing of course, I was just wondering as a lot of people seem to think that the economy is in for a rough ride.

With Dell moving out of limerick its going to cause some serious additional problems down there.

Its a terrible situation

think it will bring for alot of people down to earth with a bang who were just mindlessly spending and living well and above their means. It could also be a good thing at the end of the day in the long run think we had got very cocky as a nation.
The government need a reality check big time.
alot of people i think will jump ship and return to their own countries. We are Irish and will weather the storm and come out more united and stronger as a people and a nation

Its going to get worse. Pay off your debt and start saving money.

what recession?

We are not fairing much better in central Scotland
A town near me is seeing long established shops going under.
The high street is starting to become empty

Even the shops in the City are not doing better, when a 70 to 90% sale last more than a week, you know shops are in trouble.
The thing is while they are lowering prices, we just don't have the spare cash to spend.

The job market is not looking hopeful either - who are we going to work for
A Bank?
Woolworths?
Zavvi?
Officers Club?
and others --- They are all gone, going or not recruiting

It may take a couple of years for "normality" to return what ever that is.

House prices are crashing here too. There are a lot of New houses that will not sell, The developers are passing them on to landlords for Rent, but its still not looking good. Some people can not afford the rent either.

My Uncle was the 'famous' man who originally brought foreign investment into Ireland in the 60's, including Dell, Digital and Intel (some people may not be happy with that) and he's a big adviser for the government now. I asked him last night how he thinks things are gonna go, and the news was all doom and gloom. "well, we're only in January, we've another 11 months to go", basically implying things will get worse, but he maintains it will take a couple of years before things get back to normal, and at that only stabilising. It seems to be pretty much doom for another while, if not, a long while. He said the 80's recession, is nothing compared to what we're facing.

Honestly, I think we are all headed towards a worldwide depression scenario, like the 1930s.

John J
Could be like the great depression in the 1920's.

yes its bad & sadly i predict it will get much worse, but we will not see the total impact until the 2nd half of the year because that will give us 2 quarters of downturn before we get a idea of how bad it will be

Apparently it's going to be as bad as the one in the 80s - I heard on the radio earlier - not that that means anything to me, seeing as I was a non-existent speck then, but whatever, my Mum said 'ugh, great' so that's all the proof I need.

as a race weve been here before and made it through so don't worry about it i think its as bad as its gonna get . my son lost his job three months ago and couldn't get another there were only four jobs going in our local papper. but he has an interview next tuesday with a job he's garenteed to get.. so does that mean things are getting better.

Ali
Hopefully our best and brightest working on our country's economy have learned from the Great Depression, so I don't see it dipping past there. Hopefully it doesn't get near that bad!
