How can I get a visa to Ireland? |
I'm planning on moving to Ireland in the summer and I'm not sure how hard it is to get a visa.
I'm 18, from the US. Is it difficult? Additional Details Yes i'd be staying for the summer but i may stay longer. I was told I couldn't work during my 90 days there. |

No, it's not difficult. I am a US citizen too and when I was 23 years old I moved to Ireland to travel and have some fun. In order to obtain my visa, I signed up for a computer class and was given a 6 month student visa by the Irish immigration office. With my visa, I was also allowed to work part time legally. No hassle at all and very easy. |

To stay longer than 90 days or to work you need a work permit. These are impossible to get unless you have special skills.
Its very hard to work illegally, as you need a PPS number (like social security) and you can't get one unless you have a work permit.
However, a way around it is to enroll in a college, pay the fees, get a student visa, and then you can work up to 20 hours a week. |

Are you only staying for the summer? If you stay there for 90 days or less, you don't need a visa. You can work with your passport and birth certificate. |

If you are going for 90 days usually the customs will only give you a month and you will have to go to the Local Gardai office to get the rest of the extenstion. So where ever you are going to stay. You are not allowed to look for a job in Ireland unless you have a work permit. Not a VISA. The work permit can only be gotten if you are hired from the US and the company will get it for you. Now if you get to Ireland and decided you don't want to work there that is fine you will still have a 2 year extension.
You can find some youth programs that hire you to work with students in Ireland usually they are through a University.

No if you were to work during your 90 days without a work permit you would be considered an illegal alien. At your age it will be extremely difficult to get a visa as you will not have had enough experience in a profession (well at any age it is hard really). In order to employ you the Irish company has to be able to prove they can not find an EU citizen qualified and or with experience for the position. |

If you have any links to Ireland - going back as far as a grandparent - you may be able to get a passport. Failing that - give it a whirl, yanks are still treated as Gods in Ireland and the possibility of anyone checking is very low. Remember there are a lot of US students in Dublin and are permitted to get work on the local market. Having said that - don't delude yourself, illegal immigration is as big a topic in the EU as it's in the US. |
