Probably originally brought in by someone who wanted something a bit different in his garden. Or given as a gift - like the grey squirrels which are native to US but were said to be a wedding present to someone or other, but escaped and have flourished in the wild ever since.

No such place as southern Ireland ....

Palm trees were brought to the south and west coast of Ireland by the Gulf Stream, and then later when it was discovered they grew well there, they were planted deliberately.
