How do the Irish treat their Orphans? Can an American couple adopt out of Ireland?

When I was in college one of the professors told us that she used to work in an orphange in Ireland. She said that it was horrible. I don't know when she was their but she looked like she was in her 30s or 40s so it couldn't have been that long ago.

How are the Orphans treated? Can they be adopted out of the country?

That is a lovely that you have carried this with you & are now willing to see can you help out! So much has changed in Ireland in recent years, massive social changes! There are literally a handful of Irish children available for adoption ever year. There are so few children that it now has become common place for couples to go abroad to adopt. There was once a huge social stigma associated to having a child out of wedlock & many kids were not kept by their birth parents. Now approximately 1/3 of children are born to unmarried parents & the majority of them keep them. When it comes to orphanages, they were done away with several decades ago. They used to have group homes where less than 10 kids would live up to about 10 years ago. I had a couple of friend that lived in one, they were not at all what you would call an orphanage, just like a big house, like a big family really. They were all very well cared for & happy there. Now pretty much fostering is what happens. Fostering usually happens where the parents are unwilling to give a child for adoption (totally generalization but it’s most often why the children are not in permanent homes as opposed to there being a lack of adoptive parents).

Only way you can adopt an Irish child is if they are relatives or by surrogacy, that type of thing. It is a lot easier to find a child available for adoption in the US that in Ireland. You might try eastern Europe if you want to find kids in need. Some of my family members have adopted from there (various people over the last 10 years or so), the stories they have related sound some what similar to what you are taking about in Ireland I am guessing around middle of last century. There really is nothing like that going on in Ireland these days.

So yeah, for an easy adoption I would recommend you try to adopt in the US but if you want to try & help a child try eastern Europe.

There are no orphanages in Ireland anymore. People outside of Ireland can only adopt an Irish orphan if they are related to the child.

It could have been a long time ago. She could have gone when she was 20 years old and when were you in college? We could be talking 30 years ago. Of course it wasn't nice in those places - like anywhere.

Orphans are SUPPOSED to be treated the same as they are treated in America. It's just like in your country, some go through things that she shouldn't have to.

I think it'd be better to call it a childrens home...

Don't bother trying to get your hands on a kid here, you'have better luck in America. I don't know abou the legal work but...bigger country, more children and less confusion with the countries.

Irish couples have great difficulty adopting Irish children, there are no orphanages here. Couples I know who have adopted did so from Asian countries
