As a US citizen, you don't need a visa to enter Ireland. However if you are there for longer than 3 months you will need to apply for a re-entry visa. The link below will provide you with more details, and you will even be able to download a re-entry visa application form from it.

Three months.

However, you are allowed to leave the country and re-enter as many times as you like. If you wanted to stay for six months, at the end of three months go to Britain for a day and re-enter for another three months.
