Gaelic. Only we refer to it as Irish or Gaeilge.
Not many native speakers, but quite a lot have it from secondary school, but don't really get to use it actively.
That said, I'm delighted at TG4, the Irish language channel - it's where I first saw Spongebob. And South Park in Irish is a trip! |

Hello Ficker,
children in school learn Gaelic, but very basic. Most of them forget them by the time they are out of the school doors unless they practice with parents/grandparents. Then again you have the older generation that can speak fluently. In the middle are heritage conscious adults that know some Gaelic and are very much for speaking it.
There are several gaelic radio stations and that means that there is an audience. Right? here's a list of radio programs in case you want to have an idea
http://groups.csail.mit.edu/mac/users/rauch/celticradio/
Not only people in Ireland speak gaelic. The language is spoken in Scotland and the isle of Manx too.
How many people do speak it in Ireland? Apparently, one in 5 has some basic knowledge and one in 20 can speak fluently.
It is a very interesting language in that phonemes are pronounced so much different that their written form.
A very crude example would be the name Siobhan. It is pronounced She-Von.
Or the name of the Dublin port Dun Laoghaire. It is pronounced Dan-Lee-ree.
hope this helps, all the best and if you ever want to visit and immerse yourself, check out http://www.my-secret-northern-ireland.com/index.html

Some of the gay community in Dublin may speak 'gaylick'.
About 1% of Irish people speak Irish, which is a Gaelic language. They live in areas known as the Gaeltacht, mainly in the far west. |

No....no one speaks gaylick....unless there is some secret homosexual language I don't know about...
But there is gaelic! But we call it Gaeilge or Irish. Spoken mainly in the West of Ireland in the gaeltacht areas, although there are a few gaeltacht areas in the East, I live beside one. |

i live in ireland and one in 5 is a joke. 4 million people live in ireland, about 2 million are foreign, slight exaggeration but certainly more than a million if you take the fact that officially there are 300,000 poles.
that would mean 50% of the 2 million irish speak irish, not a chance. i know about 2 people who speak it. nobody in dublin does. i would say less that 100,000 people speak it.
english is the most spoken language in ireland followed by polish, then take your pic after that, french, bulgarian, romanian, check and irish. so i think it is just another irish spin on the language,
biggest waste of money- all european documents being translated into irish as it is an official language. think we could spend that money on the roads or health service personally. |
