Jeans are acceptable in most places. Just don't wear trainers. I'm from Kilkenny and I really hope you enjoy your stay here. Don't forget to visit Kilkenny Castle. It's gorgeous. Also, I'd recommend the following restaurants - Lautrecs, Kieran Street (the street behind Dunnes Stores) Rinicinnis, The Parade (opposite Kilkenny Castle), Cafe Sol, William Street, Pearls Chinese Restaurant (Irishtown), Italian Connection, Parliament Street, Zuni's Restaurant, Patrick Street (dressy place). Have a great time.
Have to say I'm a bit disappointed with some of the comments I've seen about the way Irish respond to tourists from other countries. In every country, no matter where, there are always a few idiots who treat people badly. The majority of people here are friendly and welcome tourists. If we were to write off all countries because of the way a few behave, none of us would ever travel anywhere. |

I was in Ireland with my husband in December. He wore jeans everyday and it never seemed to be an issue. As for the comment about "trainers" (athletic shoes), this may well be true. My husband wore black boots which were a little more dressy. My only negative comment about jeans is that they really aren't very warm. In a wet, cool climate like Ireland, I think something thicker with a little wool in it would be more comfortable and will try out faster if you get caught in rain. |

LOL, the answer above mine is really funny. Go see them in Belfast? You'd be running for your life there if you werent careful. And Dublin a druggie city? I didnt see much of that the couple of times I was there. Id say that you might want to bring a few nicer things, in case you go to dinner someplace nice, or go to one of the nicer clubs in Dublin. That about it though, jeans are pretty standard wear over there, and you wont stand out at all in them. Enjoy the beer, the Guinness is so much better there! The brewery tour in Dublin is good too. Just be prepared for the food- you may not even notice it the first day, but its so, so bland. Breakfast tastes almost like lunch, which tastes almost like dinner. Thats the one thing I dread about heading over there. The rest is great. |

hi ya jeans are except ably every were like restaurants and stuff and if you are going to a fancy restaurant then you dint need me to tell you that you will have to dress for the occasion i read some of the answers here and who said us Irish dont like English that's not true we like every one so like most of the answers the crime rate all over the world has gone up so be a little carefully OK and Hope ye enjoy Ur stay ? |

Hi,
It really depends. I find that restaurants are more formal here in Ireland than in North America. It depends on where you are going to eat. If you are going to a fast food or just a little corner cafe, jeans would be grand. If you are going to proper restaurants, especially the ethnic restaurants, you may want to leave the jeans behind. Also, don't wear your runners into pubs or those "proper" restaurants. Enjoy your time in Ireland. |

jeans are acceptable in most places unless you are wanting to go someplace fancy where there may be a dress code.
And to some of the comments at the top of the page:
Dublin is no more of a druggie city than any other city in the world
There is nothing at all to be afraid of in Belfast
English people are not stopped from entering any establishment in any town in ireland and i know plenty of them who live here and not one has felt like they are treated like scum. |

im not liking the few harsh answers down below drugs are problem every where, every village, every city, every country and to the person who said english get treated badly.......how else do u expect us to be and your obviously a rough bunch hence why they wont leave u in any where ..........and yes jeans are practically worn every wear.......but if u wear jeans wear shoes not runners or trainers??? shoes are a problem here as they may make ya look a bit scraggy......any way im from kilkenny not the city im nearer to waterford.......but still kilkenny lol hope u enjoy the stay and just be careful in general!!!!!!!!!!!! |

we wore jeans everywhere. unless you are going somewhere fancy that requires reservations, you should be fine. and i don't know what the other person meant about them hating english. in southern ireland...the republic, they don't seem to. maybe in Northern Ireland which is under english rule. my english friend from manchester, uk, went with us last year, and then back to dublin himself in the spring, and had a blast both times. oh, and pack Really light...there are heavy charges for overweight luggage, and you won't use most of it, anyway! |

hi,
think you'll be ok with jeans, but would bring a trousers if you're going someone a bit fancy, and also dress shoes, as i live in a village in ireland and one of the pubs here started stopped people going in in sneakers!!
Hope you have a ball, if you were coming to Clare, well then you definitely would! |

why you going there, they hate english. do me a favour when you get there and meet other english people, ask if they work there or are just on holiday. english people who work there are treated like scum and are not allowed in there pubs except a few crap ones. they love holiday people because your spending a lot of money there and you wont be staying long. |
