I'm Irish can I still go to college?

I'm in fifth year, I was hoping to do a basic humanities degree and then a postgraduate in anthropology and celtic studies. I'm aiming for 480 in the LC. But with the fees going up...
My dad makes 42000E a year, my mum's annual varies cos it's part time, it's a two-child family. I'll be seventeen when I leave school, can I start then?

I could work but I cant imagine getting anything that pays enough while unqualified and everyone losing jobs, am I eligible for a grant or anything?

I dunno if it'd be cheaper to study aboad but thats really a last resort

'fees going up' I mean the entrance fees, and they'll probably reintroduce the real fees soon

What do you mean by fees going up? You should be eligible for free fees (they haven't yet re-introduce fees at the moment) and while there may be administrative charges (about 1500E for 2009/2010), it should be affordable. The talks on fees reintroduction has been going on for a few years now, so fingers crossed it's not going to come into effect anytime soon.

You should also be able to apply for maintenance grant, and it'll be assessed based on your parents' income and number of dependent in the family. If you have a look at this link (http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/education/third-level-education/fees-and-supports-for-third-level-education/higher_education_grants_scheme ) seems like you'll only be eligible for part maintenance as your parents' salary is over 40K per year.

To be honest, it's unlikely that it'll be cheaper to study abroad. Studying in UK and US will definitely cost a whole lot more. Studying in another EU country may be on free fee basis but courses are usually conducted in the national languages and not English, so that could be a major problem.

If you want to look into money saving measures, try to apply for courses in college/uni closest to you so that you can hopefully live at home thus saving on rent and utilities plus some food.

Good luck!

You are eligible for a grant and you could definitly go to college.

Well if you do choose go to university in the US - just know that many of the answers here have given you fairly inaccurate information. US State and city colleges and universities have varying rates and if you get a scholarship, can be quite the bargain. For in-state (resident) students the rates are even lower. Some state schools in the US are extremely hard to get into due to their good value for money. Given that the Euro is strong, that may defray your costs a little.

I do think you would save more money by staying in Ireland, even if fees do go up. But research all your options.

Good luck. Higher education is always a stretch financially, but you will make it work somehow. I was in a similar situation myself back in the day.

You can get a grant on that.

Don't go to the US, the colleges there are overpriced.

You should be able to who knows fees mightn't even be in by then. Most arts course are about 5000 a year plus 1000 registration. and ya you can start college once you're 16 janurary in the year you want to start
And no, unless you get a scholarship don't go to america because it's like 10,000 dollars a year

I would check into studying abroad...honestly you could get some scholarships to the United States. I was over in Ireland last summer and a lot of the people I met over there were coming to the states to get an education. Plus, it's a lot cheaper for you guys to come here...might as well!
