If you're going from mainland Britain (or any part of Britain actually) then you'll need a full passport. I don't know if it's different travelling from Northern Ireland, I suspect that it isn't though. Also if you're flying you'll need your passport anyway in case the plane is diverted and you end up landing in another country. I had to use my passport to go from Luton to Aberdeen. It's also for security purposes. Unless you have been specifically told by the airline that you can fly just with a driving licence, don't attempt it. You are likely to be turned away at check-in.

I went to Dublin in august last year and flew on just my photo driving liscense. If you're going anywhere in the EU you don't need a passport. But always double check with you travel agent/flight company first.

Curious
Ryanair say you can travel with the photo drivers licence, but I would take the extra paper to be on the safeside.

watergungoodluckmate
you only need ur d/l and good luck and have a great time

Travel within the EU you usualy only need an accepted form of Photo ID - you do NOT need your passport when traveling within the EU if you have an accepted form of ID such as a National ID card or Drivers Licence (EU).

Orla C
If you're flying you need your passport.

Otherwise you need proper paper ID with photo to travel to Dublin by ferry.

emma m
you should be ok with that, it has to be a photo id anyway, but if you still feel unsure ring your local travel agencies, or pop down when your free, have a good time!!!

Unless you are traveling from Northern Ireland to the Republic you will probably find you actually need to take your UK passport as you are traveling to another country. In the same way that you need your passport to travel to France or any other European nation as UK is NOT part of the Schengen agreement.

Check with the airline and/or your travel agent as you do not want to end up being refused entry or travel because you do not have the correct paperwork. If in doubt use your passport.

I'm not sure only check with the airline your going with as some will only accept a passport or driving licence there is one who will accept a pension bus pass.
