Been to Athenry, and to be honest it wasn't very exciting.
Stay around Galway city, walk around the Claddagh to Salthill. Call into the tourist office on Eyre Square and ask them.

Looks a very quite place to me. Just Google in Atherny Co. Galway and you'll see what I mean

not really much to do there! but its easy to get there for a couple of hours if you just wanted to say you'd been there! :) My advice though would be to stay around the city and pop out to connemara or down to Clare! Nicer scenery!

Low lie the fields of Athenry, where once we watched the small freebirds fly, I've never been to Galway, only Dublin, but I'm sure you'll have a fabulous time there.
