Sandra

I'm going to visit Ireland this year-how is their way of life/cities different from the U.S. ?

I have 3 grandparents that were 100% irish & 1 that was not. Although my family (McGeary) loves being irish only one relative has gone there & quite frankly she didn't say much about it. I've always felt a longing to go there & my husband & I are thinking of moving there once the last of our children are out of the house. Is there work there? What are the houses, people.......like? Any info would help-thank you!

Have a look at www.oasis.gov.ie, this has all the information on the legal aspect of moving to Ireland.

if you are going to move and are trying to get away from city life etc, then it would be best to keep out of Dublin. it is now the same as any other city in the world, and is populated with cultures from the world over.
Head to the west coast, the scenery is beautiful, the cost of living is cheaper, the people are freindlier and the way of life is so relaxed.

If you are serious about moving to Ireland, you might consider applying for Irish citizenship. Perhaps the rules have changed, however, at one time I believe one of the requirements was having an Irish grandparent. You can get information at:

According to the United Nations the irish citizens are the wealthiest citizens in the world..or the second..im not too sure..we have an abundance of jobs because our economy is doing really well at the moment. Dublin, the capital is in my opininon like any other main city in Europe..here there are plenty of jobs but the downside is that the house prices are expremely expensive..my family recently sold a 4bed semi-detached house in one of Dublins Suburbs for 400,00euro..thats what youl generally pay in the dublin area..alternatively you could look at counties(regions) such as wexford, wicklow, meath, west meath..these are all commutable to dublin and the house prices arent as expensive..to check out the sort of house you can get and for what price check out www.myhome.ie!
as ive said dublin is like any other main city..if you really want to "Irish experience" look at galway, kerry ..anywhere along the west coast..here the towns arent as heavily populated as Dublin. they are also quite scenic areas with amazing locations such as Connemara and the Cliffs of Mohar.
The people in Ireland are friendly and welcome..well the majority are anyway..Ireland has alot of Foreigners living here so weve kind of adapted to them you could say!
Best of luck making your decision, you could also find more information from the irish embassey in the states..im also aware that its possible to get get help through a location office..this is someone who can help you find accommadation and any other help you might need!
as i said dont worry about jobs..provided you have some qualification youl be fine!
best of luck

Ireland ROCKS! Voted the best place to live in 2004/2005. The people are very friendly and enjoy their lives. Here in the US we are to uptight and focused on money. As far as the cost of living goes, be ready for a shock! VERY EXPENSIVE! House cost a fortune and if you are not in a high paying field ie DR, MP, or are rich you may not be able to purchase one. Yes there is work but you have to obtain a work permit. This can be hard unless you are in a field where you a needed. I loved the UK and would return and live if it was not so expensive. People are more down to earth, friendly and not so stuck up as here in the US. If you can work it out I would move there.

I LIVED THERE FOR TEN YEARS, I WOULD SAY ALL THOUGH ITS ALOVELY COUNTRY, IT IS QUITE A EXPENSIVE PLACE TO LIVE.SHOPS ARE QUITE DEAR, CLOTHES ARE NOT SO BAD SINCE YOU HAVE THE BIGGER CHAIN STORES GOING IN.ELECT RIAL STUFF IS COSTLY.TAXES ARE QUITE HIGH .MEDICAL BILLS CAN WORK OUT EXPENSIVE.I think it all depends on where you live, i found accommodation not to bad.If you have good jobs you may survive over there. Some area`s work is hard to find and it all depend`s on what you do.You would find it very laid back, most people are pretty friendly, there is a good atmosphere in the pubs, plenty of singing and dancing going on.I WOULD SUGGEST A GOOD HOLIDAY FIRST OVER THERE AND SEE WHAT YOU THINK FOR YOUR SELVES.
