Brittarose

I am an American visiting Ireland and want to stay more than 90 days. Any ideas how to do so legally?

Please don't say "get married." I am interested if anyone out there has succeeded in coming over and getting a work permit? Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks.

This is really going to depend on how much over the 90 days you want to stay. When I went over for my research, I stayed for 4 months without a work or student visa. I had to register at the local immigration office and got this nifty little immigrant ID card (never had to use it, but you're supposed to carry it at all times). If I recall correctly, they wanted proof that I really was going to leave when I said I was going to, proof that I could support myself through my stay without working, and they also asked to see some of the information on my research (but I can't remember if that was just curiosity on the officer's part or if it was really required). I suggest that you call your closest Irish consulate, explain why you want to stay longer than 90 days, and see what they suggest. It's pretty much the only way to make sure you do everything legally.

the immigration in ireland has been tightened up over the years and obtaining work permit while in the country is not something that i've heard of, particularly since it's a lengthy process getting one (usually by an employer, and it costs 1000 euro per work permit per annum) and often you may have to return to your home country before entering again.

are you an irish descendant? if so, you could apply for an irish passport, and that would give you the freedom to travel here and to live here without time restriction. you'll need to check the dept of justice's website to check on the criteria for such application.

alternatively, you could maybe enter ireland, and leave within 90 days to another country in europe, then re-enter? but of course, the immigration officer at the airport reserves the right to allow/deny entry.

So simple. Walk across border into United Kingdom known as northern Ireland and you can then re enter for 90 more days !

Nip accross to the UK or Europe for the day and come back again

It depends on how long you want to stay. There are many agencies that can help you work overseas. I had a friend from college that worked in the UK for a year and the agency helped her get the permit.

If you want to stay just a little bit longer all you need to do is leave the country and go back in. You will get another stamp on your passport and you can stay other 90 days. Take a quick trip to the UK or something.

Right now, getting a visa isn't easy because work has become quite scarce.

Unless you have a trade or profession that is in very short supply, I'm afraid you stand little chance.

That is, of course, unless you can claim irish citizenship through a parent/grandparent.

listen with all the illegal immigrants here you'd have no problem. try the north east of ireland
