I am planning to attend Dublin City University, is it expensive?

Hello! Like I said, I am planning on attending Dublin City University and I'm worried I may not be able to afford living in Ireland! How much would it cost for rent? And I'm not familiar with the Irish currency so please translate it if you can into the American currency! Thank you! Also, is Ireland a nice place to live? Any tips for a lass like myself? :) Thank you all! Have a good one!

- Currency 1 Euro = 1.2765 U.S. dollars
- GDP per capita $41,000 (2005 est.)
- The national minimum wage is €8.65 per hour.
- Dublin is the 3rd most expensive city in 2008 according to New York Index, 105.2.
- Ireland has the second highest per capita income of any country in the EU next to Luxembourg.
- Ireland has the fourth highest in the world based on measurements of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita.

Estimate of a Monthly Student Budget, in euro
Accommodation* off-campus 430
Food 400
Electricity (estimate based on house share with 3 people) 15
Heat (estimate based on house share with 3 people) 15
Textbooks and Study Materials 75
Clothes, entertainment, other living expenses 250
TOTAL per month 1,185 euros, ($1513.00).

Good Luck There...

The currency in Ireland, like in many other countries in Europe, is the Euro. If you're coming to study here, you may as well get used to it, or indeed prepare yourself for it by finding a currency conversion website.

You want to find out about rent? Try www.daft.ie for indications, but student accommodation might be different.

Ireland's a lovely place to live, but Dublin is not representative of Ireland, even Dubliners admit this.

any questions?

Well, as much as I love my home Dublin is ridiculously expensive! Property prices at the moment are going down though. But they are phenomenally high at the moment. I know this doesn't really apply to you but just to give you an example of how expensive property is:

An ordinary 2 bedroom apartment in South Dublin would cost around €600,000 which equates to $760,853.98. to buy!

Now in terms of rent, my situation is that me my Mum and my Brother rent a house in a nice area of south Dublin and rent is I think about €1,500 a month. We're holding off buying a house because property prices are dropping at the moment and until they hit they're lowest low its a big mistake to buy.

You can share an apartment in a really nice area in Dublin for about €450 a month = $570 but it's not that close to the city there is a bus very near by though that comes every 10 minutes and is very easy to get. It goes right into the city centre. My brother goes to DCU and gets it in and out and we live in the area described above.

Haha look at me sounding like an estate agent.

I hope you do come to Ireland because it really is a wonderful city... saying that though as soon as I graduate I'm going to Canada so..

the dollar is very weak at the moment you get something like 1.50 dollors for every one euro. rent is expensive depends where you are renting the closer to the city centre the more expensive. how much income will you have per week and will you be living alone or sharing?

Ireland uses euros so 1 US Dollar = 0.80071 Euro. Below is a site that might be helpful in locating a place to stay.

Ireland is very expensive to live. Housing is bad and expensive as well unless if you wanna save yourself and try to live in the campus. The rent could be around 1000euro for an 1bd apartment. Unless if you share with other ppl but in my opinion this is not a great life at all. The rent is very expensive comparing with the minimum wage but the best thing is that all the houses/flats are coming fully furnished. (You don't need to buy anything)

Ireland is not a great place to live at all. It has a great education system, maybe one of the best in Europe but the problem is the locals are extremely unwelcoming. They don't even try to get friends from other countries. No one smiles, forget about making friends, socializing, forget about "good morning"... But as you are an American you will be fine. The worst prejudice in Ireland is towards the south Europeans (Spain, Italy, France, Greece, Portugal and East Europe).

I am sorry to say that and I am sure my description is not the picture of the country that an Irish person would like to see, however I don't wanna give you a false hope. I don't actually mean I haven't meet great people. Yes I did, I still admire them more than the lazy idiots of my homeland who only care about sex and coffee. Although they are not as friendly as they pretend to be.

There are a lot of things missing in Ireland, more than a handful (transports, safety) but all the places have problems, one way or another no place is perfect.

When you say nice place it would be better to say what exactly you mean. Nice based on your personal expectations? My concern is the place you want to live must be your home (temporary or permanent). If you have no support from the locals then there is a problem.

Don't do it. Ireland, especially Dublin is ridiculously expensive and the college fees have just been increased by 50% and the American Colleges have a better standard of education statistically. Ireland is great but Dublin is pretty crappy, can't wait to get out. Unless you're very wealthy you will most likely struggle to afford it
