Lauren

I have a few more questions about ireland! Help?

Okay what's the best time of year to go?

What place is best to visit with a bit of excitement in the evening?

I am planning a trip with my mom and I, kind of a pre college trip. So we want to know where to go!
I have heard Dublin is great. Galway. and County Clare? They are kind of on seperate parts though so it would be nice to know which places are worth going to.

The best time of year to go to Ireland is probably June or July. In the winter it can be quite cold (we've got freeze-fog at the moment which is really annoying), and a lot of touristy stuff closes in winter anyway. If you like the idea of not being mobbed by little kids, go in June - the primary schools aren't off for the summer until 1 July.

Now, about stuff to do & places to go... (loads of links in Sources)

If you are looking for evening entertainment then in Dublin I'd recommend Whelans and the Academy, or the Temple Bar area. If you want something more traditionally Irish, try O'Donoghues.

Dublin is the capital city and it has loads of stuff. For example if you are looking for shopping try Dundrum Town Centre (a bit out of the city but so worth it), or if you want to stay in the city try Jervis St Shopping Centre.

Also, you should really look at the two hugely important "famous things" in Dublin - the Spire on O'Connell Street, and Phoenix Park (the largest urban park in Europe). In Phoenix Park you can find, among other stuff, Dublin Zoo, and Áras an Uachtaráin (the house where the President of Ireland lives).

If you want theatre in Dublin, try the Abbey Theatre.

If you go to Galway there's loads of cultural stuff. Try these websites for lots of info on Galway city:

Clare has the Cliffs of Moher, which are spectacular, and also has the Burren and the Aillwee Caves. If you're a nature lover they will definitely make you happy.

Of course there are many other areas of Ireland that you could visit, like Cork, Donegal, Limerick and Wicklow. Don't feel you have to stay in the same area for the whole of your trip - places in Ireland aren't that far apart. For example, although Dublin and Galway are on opposite sides of the country, if you drive at the right time of day you're looking at maybe 4 hours.

Don't even think you've got to stay in the Republic of Ireland - Northern Ireland has many attractions including some awesome shopping (The Outlet, Banbridge and Junction One, Antrim), plus the city of Belfast is really something special. There are no border checks, no entry/exit regulations, and no extra visas required (for a day trip - if you're staying overnight you may need a visa, depending on where you're from and the current visa laws).

Bear in mind that the Republic of Ireland uses only the Euro currency. In Northern Ireland, Pounds Sterling is the official currency, although many large retailers and chain-stores may accept Euro.

Let me know if you need any more info.

Dublin is huge and its like any other international city. i would suggest irelands second city, cork. (thats were im in college, wink wink) its good craci(fun). Dont go to dublin, clare is only good for a day trip, its got the biggest cliffs in europe off the atlantic, west kerry is good too, very scenic! go to galway or cork!

Dublin is great. Yes, its a large city but full of culture and history. Remember its quite a small country so you can get to go many places. Are you planning on a bus tour or renting a car? There are many tours which will start at Dublin airport, travel down the south coast to Cork and Kerry then up to Shannon airport in Co. Clare

As for weather, go expecting the worst at any time of the year and if you get good weather its a bonus. For some reason, May and September are usually the best months.

Enjoy it and good luck at college

Hey

well i live in ireland all my life and ive just moved to england last month. ireland really is beautiful.

the only bad thing is that Ireland weather is super unpredictable! it rains one minute, it will be shining the next, then more rain, then a storm, then more sun!

because of this you cant really give an exact time to go, and summer in ireland mightn't be the best choice because we had the most DEPRESSING rainy summer last summer it was dreadful.

i would advise you to go early autumn. that is the best time if you ask me, its usually very nice and sunny and you have a lovely calm breeze stroking in aswell. one time we got the whole of august WITHOUT RAIN! so would advice early august up till the end of september.

so the thing is, irelands summer is really unpredictable, as i said. so the best time to go is early autumn.. =]

you'll have a brilliant stay there!

good luck!

You could go to all three, if you want. They're not actually THAT far away from each other, especially if you get a train.

I live in Dublin and think it's definitely worth visiting. Lots to see and do.

Clare is my favourite county. It's just so beautiful and scenic, and really encapsulates the whole culture of Ireland.

Go to some Irish pubs and hear some trad music. Go to Clare's rugged coasts and cliffs. Go to a céilí (traditional dance) and learn a step or two.

Have lots of FUN! (:

To do honest September is the best time to go.... the tourist season will have died down (so it won't be that busy) and that's when we get our best weather. It is not too big a country so you should try and take in a few places. Perhaps fly into Dublin, stay there 4 nights, then take a train to Kerry stay there 4 nights. Perhaps stay a night or 2 in Mayo and take in an island off the coast of Ireland, perhaps Clare Island? Don't stay on Clare Island though the hotel is awful! Stay in Mayo and take a day trip there. I also here that the Gulf stream has made a small coral reef off Mayo, I haven't seen it myself yet but I'd say it's worth a trip.
Fly out of Cork airport maybe?
Good luck!! :-)
