I have an 'indefinite leave to remain in UK' would I require a visa to visit the Republic of Ireland? |
Actually, not me but someone very close to me, would the person require a visa to visit:
1. Republic of Ireland
2. France
3. Actually, any EU country
4. US
5.Canada
6. Australia
I have checked the websites of these countries but not satisfied with the information given. The person has a NIGERIAN passport and would like to vist these countries. I am assuming that the same visa requirements wouldn't apply to him as a person who is applying freshly from Nigeria, since this person could be just one year away from a full British passport.
Any advice would do.
Thank you Additional Details The Republic of Ireland isn't part of the UK is it? I think only Northern Ireland is part of UK, not The Republic??? |

Ireland is NOT part of the UK, You should contact your local embassies for more infomation,
I was mainly replying to say Ireland was not part of the UK... That person that replied must be from the US .. they know feck all about Ireland or England! |

To clarify, yes the Republic of Ireland is a separate country & Northern Ireland is part of the UK.
You should either speak to the Home Office or to the Irish Embassy in London, they'd be in a better position to give you advice.
For their email address, the link is on this page:
http://www.dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=28455
For details of the Irish Embassy's hours & telephone number, the number they give for Visa information is a premium line number so you might want to go with the ordinary landline:
http://www.embassyofireland.co.uk/home/index.aspx?id=33791
Information on who needs a visa:
http://www.embassyofireland.co.uk/home/index.aspx?id=33738
My understanding of ILR is that the person remains a citizen of their country of origin, they don't actually have the right of abode in the UK but they can live & work there indefinitely so countries they visit will probably treat them as a Nigerian citizen & expect them to fulfil the usual requirements for entry to the country. You really do need to discuss this in more detail with the Home Office (or if you have a solicitor specialising in immigration matters you should go through it with them.) |

the uk and ireland have a common area travel agreement. that is why irish people do not need a passport to visit the uk and vice versa. your friend would qualify under the same law. |

Hi, you'll just need to fill in a landing card or soemthing similar to enter Ireland but it's not like getting a tourist isa fo China or India which takes ages.
Just to clarify - there is no Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, there is Ireland and the UK(of which Northern Ireland is part). Ireland and Northern Ireland are two seperate countries with nothing to do with one another. The "Republic Of Ireland" is only a made up name too used by people from the UK for differing reasons to describe my country. I can understand the confusion as message often sent out to Americans and Canadians is that they are one and the same. |

The republic of Ireland is part of the United Kingdom and so will be covered by the paperwork you allready have ,read exactly what is stated on the visa you have and see what is says about other EU countries.
All the rest you will have to check and apply for specific visas to cover either all the EU or Canada and Australia. |
