ILR does not grant you the same rights as British citizens when it comes to movement within the EU, it means you can live & work in the UK but that's it, you remain a citizen of your native country and require visas to travel to and work in other EU member states.

With ILR, you could use this opportunity to be a British citizen through naturalisation - once that's been granted you go where you like within the EU or apply to the Irish Embassy in London for a visa to work and live in the Republic of Ireland. However, with Indefinite Leave to Remain you can move to Northern Ireland without any hassle as Northern Ireland is part of the UK.

You also need to investigate what happens to your Indefinite Leave to Remain if you decide to leave the UK, as I understand it if you leave the UK & settle elsewhere for more then 2 years you lose it and it's the Home Offices discretion if it's granted to you again.

Contact the Irish Consulate and find out what documents you need to bring with you.

Look at jobs websites to see if there is the possibility of finding work here - at the moment the onus is on to employ our own, so you might be out of luck there, unless you have specific qualifications.

If you do relocate and have a place to live, even temporarily, you just need to go to your local police station (gardai) and let them know you've relocated from another EU state, show them your passport and whatever documents you were told to bring, and then take it from there.

I am from Northern ireland, so if your british i suggest relocating there.

Hello,

(ANS) No.1 Its worth bearing in mind that IF you relocate to Northern Ireland this is still considered as part of the UK so you would have less difficulty in my opinion. Northern Ireland uses the £

No.2 Southern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland is NOT in the UK but is a part of the European Union and as such you need a pass port to cross the border. I would think relocation to Southern Ireland would be much more complicated and difficult. Southern Ireland uses the Euro.

No.3 Now is a terrible time to be moving to Southern Ireland as they are in as much of a financial mess as the rest of the UK. The Irish so called "Celtic Tiger" Economy has totally collapsed because like many other EU countries it was based on a property boom (bubble) which has burst. Banking is on its knees and unemployment is going up just like in the UK.

Kind Regards Ivan

Why When How
