The situation is very confusing - it depends on your citizenship, when and where you were born and how you intend to travel.
If you are a UK citizen and you wish to travel by land and sea to the Republic of Ireland, then you need no identification. The ferry company may ask for some photo id for their own records, and if you go by car you will need your drivers license, of course.
If you fly the law states that a UK or Irish citizen can enter Ireland without a passport, while all other nationalities need a passport. However, you may be asked to prove that you are a citizen. For many people, the only way to do this, is to show a passport.
You can use a drivers license as proof IF you were born in the UK before 1983. This is because the drivers license only states place of birth, not citizenship. If your place and date of birth guarantee you are a citizen, then you can use a drivers license. This only works for people born in the UK before 1983 - after this date the law changed and citizenship was no longer automatic for all people born in the UK.
The end result is - bring a passport if you can - its a lot easier than all that. |

Honestly no. But you will need ID. For example if you have a drivers licence, that would be ideal.
I don't know what the guy above means. If you are in Northern Ireland you will never be asked for ID to enter southern Ireland. My husband and I have driven from Dublin to Antrim on many seperate occasions and I don't have any ID. |

Yes.Although it is part of the EU it is a different country separate entirely from the UK.you'll probably be asked for it at the airport.i was in britain earlier this year and needed my passport on several occassions |

not if your travailing to northern Ireland because that is part of UK. only republic of ireland you need passport |

If you are traveling to Northern Ireland, no you do not. If, however, you are traveling to Ireland you will need a passport because you will be entering an EU country.
Generally it's worth it to get your passport anyway because then you'll have it for traveling whenever you need it. |
