You can sell the car with or without paying the VRT on it. If you dont pay the VRT the buyer will have to and therefore wont give you as much for it. Check out revenue.ie for loads of info on it and how much it will cost : http://www.revenue.ie/index.htm?/faqs/faq_cat8.htm
Good luck!!

I would agree, advertise and sell it in the North

Actually you will do a lot better if you put it on EBAY.uk or BuyandSell.ie

The easiest way is to drive it up north. You can't have a UK car permanently in Ireland as you need to reregister it and pay import duty (cars are one of the few things in the EU exempt from the common market).

The easiest way is to sell it in Northern Ireland.

If the VRT is already paid, just go ahead and start advertising it (Autotrader.ie).
If not, check out the cost of VRT for the vehicle and mention it in the ads.
