The vast majority if Ireland has 'Big open grassy spaces' so do your research on your requirements and needs first. |

1. check Immigration laws in Ireland.
2. Are you a professional that can obtain work in Ireland? Is your career on the 'skills list"- Check Irish Immigration.
3. Do you have Irish grandparents- parents? check Irish Immigration.
---- First check to see if you qualify to live here.
4. Does your income and job allow for you to live on a very big and wide open grassy space? If not, you may have to rent an accommodation and drive to the 'big' open grassy spaces for enjoyment.
You may want to consider moving when the US dollar is strong.
5. Have you ever visited Ireland?
6. You will most likely live where you can find employment. "Dublin"
Fantasies about living abroad is 'one thing' but actually going ahead and making the move is another thing which is not easy. Fantasies are sometimes best left as fantasies for some people. I hear over and over agian how many of my friends and family wish they could live and work in Ireland permanently. On the same token they go on and on about how much they love their family, parties, etc. It seems to me that they haven't given much thought about what living abroad really means.
Best of luck in all your adventures! |

Cheapest place would be Leitrim or Roscommon. Lots of new vacant houses and miles of open spaces, bogs and lakes. |

Rural Ireland is indeed beautiful, the big open grassy spaces remote, and if you want solitude or privacy, it's there.
But I would suggest living in a country town, close to shops, churches, post office, schools, doctor and all other necessary services without needing a car for every journey. If you can find a town close to a railway station, then that gives you extra transport choices besides only the bus, which in many places is infrequent.
If you can be self-employed, nearly any place would suit. If you are intending to work for an employer, then you will need to live near where your work is. With the times that are in it, that will be your biggest hurdle. Jobs are scarce now.
Galway is nice, but probably too big for you. Try Westport, or indeed check a map of Ireland online and google the different towns until you find one you like the sound of. If you will be returning to US on visits home, you might like to be relatively close to either Dublin or Shannon. |

I like Donegal, but you should visit and see what appeals to your tastes. Ireland's economy is in worse shape than the US' at present; not a great time to relocate. What is your financial situation? You would need to be near someplace to work I assume, so you need to factor that in rather than just seek an open area for it's looks. It is no fun to starve in someplace picturesque.
If big open grassy spaces are your determining factor, there are plenty of places in the US that will fit the bill. Montana could use some people. They have more livestock than humans as it stands. You could settle in Butte, Montana, known as Ireland's Fifth Province for the number of Irish immigrants that settled there. |
